$60,000.00 year


Employment Term:
Contract May - March 31, 2024 (possibility of extension until June 2024), Full time hours (35 hours/ week)

Getu'nmiet Program Developer and the Executive Director


General Description:


Mi'kmaw Native Friendship Centre is centrally located in the urban Indigenous community of Halifax and is looking for
One (1) Program Coordinator - Seven Sparks Justice Program.


The Program Coordinator of Seven Sparks Justice Program is responsible for providing support to Indigenous justice clients who are about to exit incarceration, have exited incarceration on parole, stat release, or warrant expiry.

The Program Coordinator will assist clients with reintegration, justice support, cultural support and advocacy. This position networks with all levels of Government, external organizations (shelters), Policing, Parole Officers and works with urban community Elders


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Correctional Services of Canada (CSC) for Section 84 releases
  • Be responsible for accepting clients as Section 84 releases
  • Attend parole hearings
  • Provide clients with court support and attending sentencing circles
  • Complete monthly work plans
  • Complete intake and orientation of clients
  • Plan, organize and facilitate healing circles to support clients; circles can include MLSN, Elder, parole/ probation officer and client. (Others may need to be invited to attend including professional supports, psychologists, pastoral supports, family, housing or employment support staff, etc.)
  • Outreach to maintain partnerships to support client's needs: MLSN, Elizabeth Fry, HRP, MNFC program staff, Parole/ probation officers, Elders)
  • Provide day to day program support: bus tickets, medicines for ceremonial use, reference support to other services, obtaining ID documentation, advocacy to access services and support
  • Organize special services and landbased healing opportunities cultural (sweet grass picking, cultural workshops, hand drum making, sweat lodge ceremonies, beading, regalia making)
  • Access database to input/ maintain client data
  • Utilise resources and funding from the Getu'nmiet program
  • Complete reports and financial information for funders as per contract agreements as well as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Develop research opportunities in partnership with academic professionals
  • Typically work M-F 9am4pm
    potential for workshops to be weekends/evenings on occasion:
  • Attend professional development opportunities
  • Adhere to all MNFC policies and procedures
  • May perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • College diploma in Community/Social Services or Program Administration/ Justice
  • An acceptable amount of combined education and experience (25 years) working within an Indigenous community and program administration may be accepted
  • CPR First Aid Training (current)
  • Must have reliable means of transportation and a valid driver's license
  • Must provide a Vulnerable Sector Check & Child Abuse Registrar upon hire
