The Stem Cell Network (SCN)*
Purpose:Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Knowledge Mobilization, the Digital Media Specialist offers a blend of strategic thinking and creative content development and will work to ensure SCN's content is positioned for success by enhancing its perception and reputation among target audiences. As SCN supports a variety of stem cell and regenerative medicine research across the country, it is the Specialist's role to showcase this work, tell the stories of researchers working avidly in the field, and highlight Canadian achievements and breakthroughs. The incumbent will use their expertise to contribute fresh ideas on how to deliver content (organic and paid) across digital media channels, and provide strategic recommendations based on data and analytics. They will experiment with new formats and platforms and navigate the ever-changing social media landscape with ease, effectively integrating and considering brand and voice.


Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:


  • Create, lead and execute shortterm and longterm digital media strategies, with support from the communications team
  • Manage social media channels, which includes developing, implementing, and evaluating content across multiple channels, and ensure that content aligns with SCN's vision and brand
  • Develop and implement specific content strategies for social media for key SCN programs, activities and initiatives, including the Till & McCulloch Meetings, Stem Cell Awareness Day, and all funding announcements
  • Plan, implement, and coordinate organic and paid campaigns (e.g., suggesting campaign budgets, content creation, content curation, pay per click campaigns, event management, publicity, social media, performance analysis etc.)
  • Manage SCN's mailing lists and curate content for its monthly newsletter, ensuring the organizations follows usability and accessibility, copyright, and other legal compliances, guidelines, and best practices (e.g., Canada's antispam legislation (CASL))
  • Coordinate with translation consultants to ensure highquality content is delivered in both official languages
  • Regularly measure effectiveness of digital communications programs and provide detailed reporting and insights to the Vice President of Communications and Knowledge Mobilization
  • Ensure compliance with style guide and accessibility standards
  • Act as the backup staff member for website updates and posting of content
  • On occasion, perform other duties as assigned

Education & Experience Requirements:


  • University degree in a field related to the position, such as Communications, Journalism, Marketing or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience related to the position
  • Minimum of four years' experience, with the past three in a digital content role, in the following**:
  • Developing, implementing and evaluating digital communications strategies.
  • Creating exceptional written content for digital media, like websites, blogs, newsletters and social media channels
  • Deep understanding of and practical experience in marketing communications, electronic media, and strategic communications planning
  • Knowledge of social media trends, digital analytics tools and maintenance of content
  • Must have knowledge of best practices in strategic communications planning, including key content strategy principles
  • Skilled in using usercentered content and search engine optimization strategies and tactics
  • In depth knowledge of social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube
  • Experience using MS Office, Canva, Mailchimp, Hootsuite or Sprout Social, WordPress and Google Analytics
  • Ability to write in an engaging and authentic style and convey complex concepts in simple language
  • Adept at multitasking and working in a detail oriented, fast paced environment
  • Knowledge of photo and video editing techniques and using Adobe Creative Suite is an asset
  • Knowledge of the stem cell and regenerative medicine sector is an asset
  • Experience working in a matrix organization
  • Work effectively in a remote team environment maintaining collaboration with other staff
  • Bilingualism in both Canada's official languages is considered a strong asset

Special Conditions:

Travel requirements are variable throughout the year and will be required at the time of the annual scientific conference.
