Job Summary

The Museum Camp Specialist will work within the Programming Department and will be responsible for the daily supervision of campers and delivery of education based camp programs focused around STEAM, history and the environment.

As a Camp Specialist they will supervise a group of 7-10 campers (ages ranging between 4-12 years old) and additional volunteers for their group.

Throughout the summer they will also assist with camp program planning that focuses on one or more of the following skill set areas:
archaeology, history, anthropology, sciences, urban nature, engineering, têxtiles, and fashion.


Responsibilities

  • Delivers a variety of education based activity plans daily to a group of campers as approved and outline by the Camp Director and Museum Program Coordinator in the daily camp schedule.
  • Assists with the research, design, and implementation of camp activity plans relating their field of specialty under the guidance of the Camp Supervisor and Camp Director.
  • Helps to ensure programming is adapted to camper needs with regards to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc.
  • Keeps attendance records and promptly reports absences to the Camp Supervisor, maintains ratios and completes headcounts according to City Camp Policies & Procedures.
  • Prioritizes child wellbeing, safety and protection throughout the camp. Evaluates situations for potential risks to the safety, protection and wellbeing of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks.
  • Ensures the wellbeing, safety and protection of each camper in his/her assigned group.
  • Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies for specialized program, reporting any inventory shortages to the Camp Supervisor.
  • Ensures all participants are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes.
  • Organizes and assists with setup and cleanup of camp events, activities and programs.
  • Follows City of Markham policies and procedures in program activities.
  • Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing City of Markham customer service, diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethnocultural, English as second language, socioeconomic).
  • Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise.
  • Maintains positive, constructive relationships with camp staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs. Works with inclusion staff as needed to ensure all campers are able to participate.
  • Coaches and mentors camp counsellors, volunteers and campers.
  • Provides regular updates and feedback to the Camp Supervisor.
  • Part
icipates in pre-camp orientation and training sessions, supporting the Camp Supervisor where necessary.

  • Other duties as required.

Requirements:


  • Must be at least 16 years of age by June 1, 202
  • Preferably two years Camp Experience or Equivalent in education and experience,
  • Currently enrolled taking course relating to Technology, Science and/or Engineering based or related field.
  • Experience working with children;
  • Knowledge of child development;
  • Knowledge of program planning would be an asset;
  • Leadership experience i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council,
  • Experience/education in a specialized field such as archaeology, history, anthropology, sciences, urban nature, engineering, têxtiles, fashion, pottery and Education.
  • General interest in the Museum field.
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR 'C' required;
  • HIGH FIVE Healthy Child Development is required;
  • HIGH FIVE Quest 2 is an asset
