Position Overview:

The Support Worker - Casual Staff will be a member of the shelter team that delivers the Shelter as part of Open Arms Resource Center. The Shelter Program is a 24/7 service delivery model, which provides shelter, material supports, food supports, and housing securement support. The Program is a relational, supportive, community-based program. The Program is designed to support individuals facing homelessness in a variety of ways including social, emotional, educational, navigational, and occupational support.

This role has foundations in advocacy and an understanding of the intersections of oppression and their roles in the development, maintenance, and recurrence of homelessness. The candidate will support program outcomes and adhere to all policies and procedures as outlined by Open Arms.

Responsibilities:

  • Create a safe and welcoming environment
  • Facilitate meaningful daily activities
  • Connect individuals with appropriate community supports
  • Daily personal and apartment wellbeing checks
  • Engage in verbal crisis intervention and de-escalation
  • Keep clear records of your work and follow Open Arms' policies
  • Promote dignity, respect, and accountability in the supported living program
  • Engage in daily tasks including client/guest engagement, programming, and cleaning

You'll also be part of our 24/7 supported living program team, helping adults successfully work toward and or maintain housing in the SLP. Your job is to support our clients in maintaining safe and healthy living environments for themselves and their neighbours with the SLP, and to work towards finding housing for those staying at shelter. In this role, you will:

Qualifications:

  • Has understanding or experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Studied Social Services, Human Services, Psychology, or a related field, an asset
  • Is empathetic, resourceful, and calm under pressure
  • Strong interpersonal and soft skills to communicate effectively with various clientele
  • Wants to build a long-term career in community work or social services
  • Is ready to learn and grow in a fast-paced, people-focused role

Compensation & Benefits:

  • The rate of pay is $21 - $23/hour commensurate with experience. A $2/hour premium is offered for all night shifts.
  • You will receive 3 weeks of paid vacation per year.
  • After 3 months, you can join the group health benefit plan, with 50% of the premium paid by Open Arms.
  • You will be part of a supportive team, with regular team meetings, collaborative work, and opportunities for professional development and training.
