The Essex Terminal Railway (ETR) is a switching (or short line) railway operating in Windsor, LaSalle and Amherstburg. ETR has been providing rail service to local industries since 1902.


General Job Description


Brakemen assist in the assembly of trains and delivering railcars to various yards and industries within Windsor and Essex County.

Hours vary and weekend work will be required. Brakemen's work also includes checking train brakes and other systems prior to train movement.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Check train systems and equipment such as brakes and brake hoses prior to train movement
  • Communicate with train crew members by radio, signals or by other means to aid in the movement and operation of train
  • Receive orders from traffic controllers, observe signals and track conditions and open and close track switches
  • Set and release hand brakes and connect air brake hoses to couple and switch freight cars as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Ability to work in a safety conscious manner
  • Physical ability to push/pull with force, climb up and down rail ladders, lift and carry 60lbs.
  • Ability to work in a team environment


  • Railway experience preferred

  • Brakeman/Conductor/Engineer
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving abstract
  • Must be able to work seasonally outside in all weather conditions
  • Good hearing and vision / Good handeye coordination and mechanical aptitude
  • Pass preemployment medical / Criminal Background Check/ Drivers Abstract

Salary:
From $21.00 per hour


Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed

Supplemental pay types:

  • Overtime pay
