Department summary


Finance, Procurement and Planning is responsible for financial reporting, resource planning, procurement, investments & treasury, and risk management & insurance.

We have a team of service partners who work closely with the faculties, units and staff across the institution to provide excellent client service.

Our Resource Planning team develops, implements and oversees the university's integrated planning process, prepares and administers the institutional budgets, and conducts financial analysis and forecasting


Position summary


The Office of Resource Planning is seeking a service-oriented professional to support the University of Alberta's integrated financial planning framework.

A critical success factor will be in taking an integrative approach towards financial planning. The individual will provide analysis and modeling to support evidence-based decision making at executive levels. Equally important will be the provision of advice and recommendations based on qualitative analysis, impact assessments, and short
- and long-term implications of alternatives.


Duties

  • Leads analysis and modeling of institutional revenue streams and expenditures.
  • Manages and recommends budget allocations in support of the strategic plan.
  • Prepares financial schedules and documentation in support of the consolidated budget (e.g. statement of operations, transfers, and net assets).
  • Facilitates working sessions with central support units in reviewing and validating institutional financial risks and assumptions.
  • Prepares institutional forecasts and variance analysis for executive management and board committees.
  • Develops forward looking statistical analysis on institutional revenue streams and expenditures.
  • Provides assessment impact of political, economic and socioeconomic factors to the university's budget.
  • Provides briefing materials and presentations for Executive Management (Vicepresidents) decision and ultimately for approvals through Governance.
  • Integrates institutional initiatives, including those related to budget planning, institutional reporting and financial management.
  • Develops institutional resource management and allocation models.
  • Responsible for policy and procedure development.
  • Advises and provides guidance on financial matters in support of institutional planning.

Qualifications

  • Minimum postsecondary degree in a related field such as accounting, finance, or commerce.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive work experience in financial budgeting/forecasting and/or financial reporting in a complex environment.
  • Forward thinker with strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills, both quantitative and qualitative.
  • Sound knowledge of budgeting concepts, and experience with budgeting, forecasting and planning, preferably within a postsecondary or public sector organization.
  • Understanding of standards under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles of Canada.
  • Technical aptitude and experience working with largescale enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, enterprise performance management (EPM) systems, business intelligence (BI) tools and Excel (and other Microsoft Office products).
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to work within timelines and on concurrent projects.
  • Knowledge of the University of Alberta's policies & procedures.
