Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the
Payroll Specialist is responsible for processing the weekly and bi-weekly payrolls for the Matheson Constructors Group of Companies.

The Payroll Specialist is accountable for accuracy, maintaining a high degree of confidentiality, and compliance with Payroll legislation. The Payroll Specialist is responsible for providing information and answering employee questions about payroll-related matters.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Prepare, verify, and process weekly and bi-weekly payrolls using Viewpoint payroll system
  • Collaborate with the human resources department to maintain employee information in the payroll system
  • Process all payroll data, including timesheets, health benefits, allowances and deductions
  • Ensures timesheets are setup with proper cost codes, aligned with project budget
  • Prepare new Employee onboarding setup in payroll system
  • Maintain and update taxable benefits
  • Manage the electronic employee and payroll files
  • Process Record of Employments (ROE) and submittal in keeping with governing timelines and Company policies and procedures
  • Respond to Employee inquiries in a timely and professional manner
  • Understand and navigate through the payroll modules in Viewpoint

Position Requirements

Educational and Professional Requirements:


  • A postsecondary diploma in Business Administration, Payroll Administration, or Accounting and/or related equivalent experience
  • Completed Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation
  • Experience working with unionized payroll
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience administering payroll in a fastpaced, unionized environment
  • Knowledge of Payroll Compliance Legislation and the Ontario Employment Standards Act
  • Knowledge of Introductory Accounting and Accounting Principles including the recording, analysis, and reporting of financial information
  • Experience in the Construction industry an asset
  • Experience with Payroll and Time Sheets software is an asset
