This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays.

Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

We are seeking a Counsel, Supply Chain and Procurement to join our Legal Team.

Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel - Commercial and Corporate Development, you will assist with managing NOVA Chemicals' risk by providing leadership and advocacy on supply chain and procurement matters.

Working with internal stakeholders in various functional areas, key shared accountabilities will include:
Assisting with supply chain and procurement strategy.
Collaborating on processes to improve supply chain and procurement efficiency.
Collaborating on digitalization of supply chain and procurement contracting.
Negotiating and drafting a wide variety of supply and services agreements for use throughout NOVA Chemicals, including technical procurement.
Assisting, drafting and negotiation of documentation required for, and resulting from RFPs, RFQs, RFIs and e-Auctions.
Provide general legal interpretation of commercial contracts for procurement of goods and services.


You Will Use Your Expertise To:
Support the legal team and procurement team on supply chain and procurement matters.
Provide input into and execute NOVA Chemicals' supply chain and procurement strategy.

As part of multi-disciplinary teams, assist with the negotiation and drafting of a variety of contracts, including complex commercial agreements relating to good and services procurement, SaaS agreements, master service agreements, construction and maintenance agreements, software licenses, and professional services agreements.

Oversee legal reviews by understanding the business drivers, clarifying complex technical issues, and ensuring a successful collaboration with internal and external parties.

Leverage analytical skills to manage complex legal issues.

Drive decisions involving complex legal issues with the potential of having a significant financial impact on NOVA Chemicals, often under time sensitive conditions.

Provide general advice on commercial legal matters.


What We Are Looking For:


A Juris Doctor or equivalent from an accredited Canadian university with 7 or more years of relevant primary experience in commercial matters, including supply chain, procurement, and logistics.

In-house experience with a company with similar needs as NOVA Chemicals would be a benefit.

A current member in good standing of a bar association in Canada with a preference shown for licensing in Alberta or a willingness to become licensed in Alberta.

Demonstrated ability to resolve complex and sometimes contentious commercial matters skillfully and with NOVA Chemicals' best interest in mind.
Knowledgeable of the laws and regulations of the jurisdictions in which NOVA Chemicals operates.
A growth mindset with the ability to drive new approaches and drive continuous improvement.
A team player able to work on diverse, multi-disciplinary teams.
Willingness to challenge other viewpoints and be accepting of having own viewpoint challenged by others. Be willing to help others, regardless of the task, to achieve a common goal.
Effective negotiation, interpersonal, conflict resolution and communication skills (verbal and written). Strong business acumen and a commercial mindset.
Ability to communicate complex legal, technical and/or business information to various audiences.
