The International Student Advisor works with all areas of the Vancouver Campus to develop and deliver programs, services and activities that promote student wellness and a sense of community within the University; assists students in their adjustment to university life at FDU-Vancouver; and provides opportunities for student personal growth and development.

The incumbent will be the contact person for student immigration issues or concerns.

The incumbent must have and maintain in good standing the Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) or the Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) designation with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC).

Additional responsibilities include planning and coordinating new student orientation programs, cultural and social programs, and co-curricular student activities and assuring adherence to immigration regulations.

The International Student Advisor reports to the Director of Student Services.


  • Advises international student population on immigration regulations and provides group or personal advising on study permits, temporary resident visas, co-op permits, and post grad work permits.
  • Advises students on Fairleigh Dickinson University policies and procedures, and counsels on social adaptation to Canadian culture.
  • Plans and coordinates co-curricular student activities.
  • Plans and coordinates New Student Orientation programs for the campus.
  • Serves as the advisor to the student association and helps facilitate the development of the organization.
  • Serves as an advocate for student concerns and represents students' needs to University administrators, faculty, and staff.
  • Provides accommodation information for overseas students coming to Vancouver.
  • Research student needs, attitudes, and opinions in relation to campus life, student services, and other matters.
  • Responsible for regulating hours of any Student Lounge areas.
  • Responsible for the hiring and training of student workers where required.
  • Works directly with faculty and staff to advise on immigration policy and its effects on academic decisions for international students.
  • Plans and implements campus recreational, cultural, and social programs for students.
  • Manages and maintains student related information on campus website.
  • Designs and publishes any literature related to the functions of the office to serve the needs of students and provides resources to other campus offices.
  • Develops and coordinates community social and recreational events.
  • Refers students to other departments for academic advisement, career planning, and tutoring as needed.
  • Maintains student records utilizing the University's Ellucian system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required, master's degree in administrative science, Higher Education Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Must have and maintain in good standing the Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) or the Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) RCIC designation with the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC).
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in international student advising or student affairs with increasing levels of responsibility.
***•Strong oral and written communications and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty.


  • Experience in the planning and implementation of events.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian immigration system is preferred.
  • Valid passport for international travel.
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Canadian residency or work permit required.
