    Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto's subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier.     Our Business Technology Support Finance Team is seeking a Data Scientist III to join the team. Reporting to the Manager, Finance Business Systems & Analytics, this individual will have oversight and accountability for all data driven projects for the department, and will streamline operations through process automation.

    What will I be doing?

  • Analyzing large and complex financial datasets to identify anomalies and exceptions.
  • Transforming complex data into simple and concise products for end users.
  • Reviewing legacy processes and identifying opportunities to increase operational efficiency without eroding key financial controls.
  • Identifying opportunities for process improvement, system optimization, and automation.
  • Using Robotic Process Automation to automate manual tasks.
  • Developing data models, metrics, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to support business needs using Azure Databricks and Power BI.
  • Developing automated analytical processes and complex analytical dashboards to respond to business problems.
  • Translating business requirements into quick prototypes and continuously iterating to improve deliverables.
  • Enabling the development of big data capabilities frameworks, and governance processes in the department/division and across the enterprise at large.
  • Providing advanced expertise and advancing the adoption of analytics, tools, and techniques across the enterprise.
  • Ensuring data driven projects meet desired outcomes and are aligned with organizational goals.
  • Oversee data collection mechanisms and how they fit into data architecture, partnering with internal and external stakeholders to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Briefings and advising senior management on a range of issues, taking highly complex messages, outputs, and algorithms, and simplifying them into digestible and actionable insights.
  • Providing subject matter expertise and supporting relevant stakeholders through quantitative analytics, and the application of appropriate advanced analytics for the enterprise's key initiatives.
  • Developing and maintaining effective partnerships/relationships with business leaders to understand their business objectives and to determine how data can be used to achieve their business goals and objectives

    What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?

  • Completion of a master's degree or Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Applied Math, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent
  • Demonstrated years of experience working in a senior data science capacity within a large-scale complex business setting, including experience working on strategy or full-life cycle data science, working with data mining tools, predictive modeling, deep learning algorithms, large data sets, unstructured data, etc.
  • In depth knowledge of the main concepts and techniques of data science to provide leadership and advanced subject matter expertise in statistical and mathematical concepts, and apply/inspire the adoption of advanced data science and analytics across the enterprise.
  • Excellent analytical skills, high attention to detail, and problem-solving ability to address business, data, and reporting requirements.
  • Fluent in SQL and scripting languages (e.g. Python or R)
  • Expert knowledge of data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI)
  • Statistical analysis (hypothesis testing, A/B Test analysis, etc.).
  • Knowledge of advanced and predictive and prescriptive analytics to lead the design, development and implementation of data management systems and statistical modeling (understanding the future / forecasting / advice on possible outcomes).
  • Expert knowledge of applied machine learning modeling experience, including expertise building and applying time-series models to anticipate, predict and prescribe solutions that mitigate/eliminate risks/problems before they materialize.
  • Project management, leadership skills and organizational skills to provide oversight to and manage multiple, simultaneous data driven projects.
  • Experienced and proficient in leveraging Microsoft Azure for data handling, analysis, and visualization
  • Deep understanding of ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) pipelines.
