SCOPE

Reporting to the Associate Vice-President Research, Development and Outreach, the incumbent provides guidance and assistance on activities that support and enhance interdisciplinary sustainability research within the university.

They also act as a resource person and guide for the research community on best practices for implementing sustainable practices in research programs and operations.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the development and implementation of an institutional framework/incubator to support interdisciplinary sustainability research.
  • Coordinate and support the implementation and budget process for the Sustainability in Research Plan.
  • Convene, organize and participate in the Sustainability in Research Stream meetings as well as with other streams, offices, units and technicians to coordinate and advance sustainability in research.
  • Assist the Sustainability in Research Stream with the development, promotion and evaluation of strategies to enhance interdisciplinary sustainability research.
  • Establish metrics, procedures and methodologies to facilitate the implementation of sustainability research initiatives.
  • Coordinate and support the Sustainable Transitions Teams Research Initiative (STTRI).


With oversight and input from the Sustainability in Research Steam, and in collaboration with the Office of Sustainability and Facilities Management, conduct research on best practices related to sustainable research activities and identify opportunities to infuse sustainable practices into new and existing research programs and activities.


  • Oversee interns performing duties and projects in support of sustainability research and sustainable practices in research.
  • Assist in efforts to measure progress of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) commitments, Sustainability in Research Plan goals, and sustainable practices in research across the university.
  • Contribute to efforts to support awareness and uptake of the SDGs and Sustainability in Research Plan goals by the research community.
  • Perform other duties in support of sustainability and SDG related research and sustainable practices in research.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to sustainability and 24 years of relevant work experience.
  • Very good knowledge (Level 5) of spoken and written English and good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written French (Level 4) for the crafting of correspondence as well as the provision and interpretation of detailed information; ability to deal with complex situations in both official languages.
  • Advanced knowledge of Word (to create, edit, format, and merge documents), Excel (to manage lists, to create complex spreadsheets, input and update information, perform calculations, and manipulate data), and Access (to perform queries). Good knowledge (intermediate level) of Outlook (to schedule meetings and share calendars) and PowerPoint (to create presentations).
  • Superior organizational skills and ability to multitask; ability to work and collaborate in a team environment; ability to work autonomously based on a profound understanding of decanal preferences.
  • Strong ability to exercise initiative, discretion, tact, judgment, and diplomacy in all interactions associated with the function of this position. Keen awareness of political and cultural sensitivities required.
  • Working knowledge of research activities, structures, and environments in a postsecondary institution.
