Title:

Investment Associate


Purpose of position:


The Investment Associate will support the development and management of an investment portfolio of companies and venture funds aligned with InBC's investment objectives of delivering strong financial returns and social, environmental, and economic impacts to benefit British Columbia.

The Investment Associate will be involved in the full cycle of investment activities - sourcing, due diligence, deal execution, and post-investment support.


Key Interactions:


Internally the Investment Associate will work with the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), Investment team members (including Investment Principals and other Investment Associates), Finance team members, General Counsel, Partnerships Manager, Communications team, and the CEO.


Externally the Investment Associate will work with early stage companies, venture investors, and ecosystem partners such as accelerators, incubators, and other entrepreneurial support organizations.


Key accountabilities:

Investment sourcing and due diligence

  • Assist in the identification and screening of new investment opportunities aligned with InBC's investment strategy through market research, deep dives and participation in ecosystem building activities.
  • Conduct due diligence and financial modeling to assess investment opportunities, as well as analysis on nonfinancial aspects to ensure alignment with InBC's impact objectives and investment criteria.
  • Support the development of investment memos and advancement of opportunities through the investment gating process.
  • Continuously stay up to date on current technology and innovation trends.
  • Support the Investment Principals and General Counsel with confirmatory and legal due diligence activities, as necessary.
  • Support the Investment Principals with execution of investment transactions, coordinating with other teams such as Legal and Finance, as necessary.
Investment portfolio support

  • Under the mentorship of the Investment Principals and CIO, support an investment portfolio aligned to InBC's investment strategy.
  • With support from the Finance team, monitor the performance of portfolio investments, and take actions as required to maintain and deliver on InBC's investment objectives.
  • Liaise with portfolio companies to capture data/information on performance related to InBC's triple mandate including socioeconomic measures, for the preparation of InBC's annual reports.
Investment portfolio development

  • Proactively engage with communities to promote awareness of InBC's mandate and generate potential leads for investment.
  • Work with the Partnership Manager to support connection to other potential funding or entrepreneurial support for investments who don't align.
Special projects

  • As required by the Chief Investment Officer and/or Investment Principals
This position could include other duties as assigned, based on the needs of the organization.


Reports to:

Chief Investment Officer, with mentorship from the Investment Principals.


% Travel:

Occasional travel across B.C. may be required.


Qualifications:


  • Experience (minimum 3 years) in venture capital, investment banking, private equity, or management consulting.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Working towards an MBA, CFA or CPA is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in a startup environment is considered an asset.
  • Experience in multiple sectors in B.C. considered an asset.
  • Established network within the B.C. venture and innovation ecosystem.
