Together We Are is a project funded through MCCSS - Innovative Supports for Black Parents.Together We Are recognizes the diversity and strength that exists within families in the black community and aims to empower and support parents and caregivers of Black children.
The program is delivered in 4-6 weeks of 2-hour sessions and focuses on engaging parents and their children (ages 5to 12).
Program Facilitators leverage the strengths of families in discussions on weekly topics including culture and identity, communication tools, advocacy, parenting styles, and strengthening parent-child relationships.
Simultaneously, the children are engaged in activities with our child-minding staff and other activity facilitators. Typical activities include African dance, drumming, story-telling and other engaging culturally relevant activities and discussions.
The DFCC Facilitator will work in partnership with our community partner and other program staff to promote and deliver programming.
This is a part time position, 20 hours per week, including some evenings, from our location in Ajax and within the Durham Region, as well as virtually, and report to the Executive Director.
- have knowledge of anti- Black racism and its effects on parents and their children, and be part of the Black community and identify as Black,
- understand group process and experience delivering group programming,
- possess a relevant post-secondary diploma or degree that reflects learning related to anti
- Black racism, child development, Social Work counselling, etc along with some related work experience with the target population
- work effectively as a team
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly Rate:
$25-30/ per hour depending on education, experience, and references. Total hours include 20 hours per week. 4 % vacation.
Reporting to:
Director of Durham Family and Cultural Centre.

- Maintain uptodate case notes, progress reports and client files with clear rationale for methods and intervention used, and statistical documentation in accordance with the program requirements
- Complete accurate statistical and narrative reports
- Monitor and maintain financial tracking where required
- Maintain statistical data relative to program objectives including client and contractual information; participate in program record keeping in an accurate and auditable manner in accordance with established program procedures
- Communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written form
- Ongoing development of new systems and record keeping methods to ensure funding requirements are met and all documentation is complete, accurate and accountable
