Environmental Coordinator Up to three 11-month temps- Job Number : 45275Reporting to the Environmental Manager, you will be part of the City of Edmonton's team responsible for enhancing the City's environmental performance, fulfilling compliance obligations and maintaining the City's Environmental Management System in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001:2015 for the assigned areas within the City of Edmonton.

With a focus on the City of Edmonton's Cultural Commitments of Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated and Excellent, you will:


  • Plan, support and coordinate environmental activities within the business area(s) to help meet climate resilience targets set out in the city of Edmonton's Climate Resilience Policy C627 and the Community Energy Transition Strategy.
  • Coordinate, direct, and participate in inspections, internal and external environmental audits to assess conformity to Environmental Management Procedures, the ISO 14001 standard, and compliance with applicable environmental legislation.
  • Provide root cause investigation services that identify and mitigate systemic nonconformities and assign corrective actions.
  • Assist with the maintenance of documentation, registries, and records to support the Environmental Management System, including environmental aspects and impacts registry, compliance obligations registry, corporate environmental programs, key performance indicators, operational procedures, and work instructions.
  • Track environmental releases and work with the business area(s) to ensure regulatory reporting and other compliance obligations are addressed.
  • Review and comment on assessment, remediation, risk management, investigation, and incident reports.
  • Control documents and manage multiple information databases that provide configurable reports, and trending graphical scorecards.
  • Help analyze and identify leading and lagging trends to assist in environmental protection and compliance.
  • Provide expert environmental advice to internal stakeholders in setting environmental objectives, targets, and improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare, present and communicate technical reports for regulatory purposes.
  • Understand the activities, products and services of the assigned business area(s) and their associated environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Plan and coordinate regular management reviews and communicate the system's environmental performance.
  • Communicate the environmental management system policies and standard operating procedures to all relevant employees.
  • Coordinate and deliver environmental management system training to interested parties, and update training modules where required.
  • Initiate, plan and conduct information and education programs. Attend public meetings and assist with the preparation of news releases.
  • Act as a liaison between the business area(s) and regulatory bodies, where required.
  • Engage interested parties to support and communicate environmental change.
  • Facilitate collaboration opportunities between business areas.
  • Proactively provide technical assistance with facility and audit inspections.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
  • Qualifications:
  • University Degree in Sciences (Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geoscience) or Engineering (Environmental); or completion of a recognized twoyear diploma program in Sciences or Technology with specialization in Environmental Sciences
  • Registration as a professional in an environmental discipline is an asset
  • Experience in ISO 14001 or ISO 9000 systems or equivalent is required, either as an auditor or a management system representative
  • 6 years of progressively responsible experience (8 years for applicants with diplomas) providing environmental leadership encompassing these areas:
  • in-depth understanding of ISO 1400
  • best practices used in industry to manage the environmental performance, aspects, risks and opportunities
  • Experience developing and maintaining Environmental Information Management systems
  • An environmental champion, capable of inspiring and leading others
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholder groups at both frontline and senior levels utilizing superior interpersonal skills.
  • An excellent written communicator, capable of developing a wide range of written documents, ranging from technical to general
  • An excellent verbal communicator, capable of delivering training sessions and making presentations to all levels of management
  • Proven ability to multitask and prioritize a number of complex tasks at any given time
  • Ability to work with mínimal direction, achieving strict deadlines
  • Ability to understand the City's overall management framework and integrate the environmental management system within the same
