Position Summary


The Transport Physician reports to the STARS Saskatchewan Medical Director and works with a team of highly skilled medical providers specializing in the care of critically ill and injured patients.


Key Areas of Involvement


The Transport Physician will be an acute care practitioner (emergency medicine, anesthesia, ICU, trauma surgery) who will work with a Registered Flight Nurse, and Critical Care Paramedic either in person or on-line, to provide high quality care and service, which includes rapid response assessment, intervention, and safe transport of critically ill or injured patients of all ages from the scene of an accident or during inter-facility transfer.

This service is provided twenty-four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days per week.


Core Competencies:


  • STARS Transport Physicians (TP) facilitate Critical Care Patient Transfers in Saskatchewan via both remote consult or by physically attending the patient;
  • STARS Transport Physicians do on average 48 hours of a mix of call and base time/month;
  • Oncall can be remote; however, the TP must be able to respond within 15 minutes to a Helipad or base and be ready with flight suit, boots and requisite gear;
  • All TPs must be available to be reached by cell phone while on call or at base;
  • Base days are an expectation for all TPs and require the TP to be physically present for a period of the day shift on the first Tuesday of every month if they are the TP on call that day with availability to fly on all scene calls and interfacility transfers;
  • TPs may periodically need to fly on fixed wing flights and use ground ambulances to aid in critical care patient transfers;
  • TPs will be required to participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.
  • TPs are also required to provide over the phone medical control for Saskatchewan Air Ambulance when on call and when required.

Qualifications & Required Experience:


  • Be an acute care practitioner in Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, ICU, or Trauma Surgery;
  • Be licensed to practice in Saskatchewan with an active certificate of registration for independent practice and in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan;
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada;
  • Understand Saskatchewan's critical care and Red Patient Referral transfer systems;
  • Demonstrate commitment to quality assurance and quality improvement;
  • Have a thorough knowledge of current and new/emerging quality guidelines and standards for critical care transport and prehospital medicine;
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Have a demonstrated track record of leading high acuity teams;
  • Participate in a process of performance review at regular intervals, as a means of supporting continuing learning and effectiveness in the role.
  • Training, education or experience in transport medicine will be considered an asset.
