The Gardener for 955 Queen Street East is responsible for maintaining, rejuvenating and growing the ground level gardens consisting of the planters in front of the building, the area around the COUNTERfit Drug Users' memorial, linear parking islands and an ecological pollinator garden on the east side.

This position is expected to work onsite during the COVID-19 pandemic.


Responsibilities:


  • Develop a work plan for the duration of the contract in collaboration with the Director Operational Health Systems, and other SRCHC staff as applicable
  • Identify plants, materials and tools required for gardening
  • Grass cutting with push mower (small area) and trim edges with clippers once a week or when needed
  • Water plants when they are dry, Precision Property Management can assist if specified
  • Weeding, pruning, raking, transplanting, edging & cultivating beds
  • Collect garbage, garden waste and follow systems for disposal
  • Complete planting following SRCHC plant directory and map for pollinator garden
  • Create and complete planting in collaboration with staff for other gardens around the building
  • Record activities and processes monthly
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:


  • Postsecondary education required; within a relevant discipline preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years of proven experience in a similar role
  • Extensive knowledge of plants and regional, indigenous plant knowledge
  • Ability to handle a range of horticultural machinery and powered hand tools.
  • Indepth knowledge of gardening techniques.
  • Familiarity with landscaping design
  • Knowledge of local pests and natural fertilizers
  • A love of the outdoors and plant life
  • Selfstarter with the ability to work independently
  • Strong planning skills required
  • Experience working with diverse communities and populations would be an asset
  • Demonstrated respect for diversity, equity, antiracism and accessibility with the ability to work collaboratively and positively with others
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Friendly personality with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Solid understanding of health and safety rules and legislation.
  • The ability to lift heavy objects
  • The ability to remain on your feet for long periods of time
  • Police clearance documentation will be required for employment
  • Proof of triple COVID19 vaccination status will be required for employment
