ASAP Law Barristers is looking for an Associate Lawyer to help this social justice practice. If you went into law to help people, this may be the opportunity for you This is _
not_ corporate law; you will be assisting people experiencing mental health crises and who require emergent legal representation.
The Position
This is a critical role for us - and we are looking to have someone who can work independently and has excellent interpersonal skills.
However, you will be working closely with your principal, who will mentor you on how to conduct Hearings before the _
Consent and Capacity Board_ and the _
Ontario Review Board_.
You will be working with individuals facing significant mental challenges and you may be required to attend hospitals, courts, and prisons across Ontario.
You must be able to quickly build rapport with individuals in crisis to gain their trust.Currently, all Hearings are being held either on video or teleconference, but this will change in the future.

You'll succeed here if you are:
Exceptional Researcher- you will primarily be dealing with health law and criminal law, specifically s.672 litigation. You must be quick and accurate in your research and be able to write comprehensive briefs
Excellent Communicator - you bring with you the ability to quickly build rapport with clients and colleagues and you do not shy away from in-person or on-line litigation
Independent - you're self-motivated and you manage and organize your time well
Flexible - able to shift focus and priority quickly to meet demands
Have Some Litigation Experience - You have appeared and argued cases before either a court or a tribunal in addition to assisting with file preparation for litigation as part of your articles or practice
Are Currently A Lawyer Member of the Law Society of Ontario - and therefore able to practice law as a lawyer in Ontario immediately. We are sorry but we are not considering anyone who is not a licenced lawyer (L1). If you are not a lawyer this is not for you.
If you are currently a member of the
Consent and Capacity Board Panel or Roster of Legal Aid Ontario let us know - we consider this a bonus but it is not required.
Your Tasks will Include:
- Researching and drafting legal briefs in tight timelines
- Conducting Hearings before administrative Boards of competent jurisdiction. You will be trained how to do this.
- Effectively communicate with and cross examine expert witnesses, or a willingness to learn same
- Building rapport with clients in precarious situations to ensure their legal rights are protected
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario as an L1 licencee (lawyer)
- Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities, be selfmotivated and problem solve effectively and diplomatically
- In person court experience an asset
- Must be able to manage caseload independently
Must have Legal Aid Ontario Solicitor number or be able to obtain one quickly
- Willingness to travel broadly in Ontario if that becomes necessary
- Possess valid driver's license
