    Description

    Manufacturing Technician

    The Manufacturing Technician position, under direct supervision, ensures that all related machines are set up in a safe and efficient manner to maximize capabilities in producing quality parts, and employees have all necessary tooling gauging and necessary information to start or continue a process. Recommends improvements in manufacturing methods in order to reduce errors and increase efficiencies to meet quality and cost objectives. Assists Project Engineers with prototype and sample submissions. Participates in continuous improvement meetings with a focus on process, cycle time and tooling improvements (both fixturing and consumable)

    Performance Expectations

    • Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centres to fabricate metallic parts, machine set-up and programming.
    • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
    • Frequent troubleshooting of machine faults i.e. re-setting machines, manipulating gantries/robots.
    • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, using precision measuring instruments.
    • Set up and operate machines on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
    • Performs tool changes and associated documentation for machine tool capability studies.
    • Perform regular machine maintenance, housekeeping and general cleanliness of the work areas (maintain the requirements of 5S program).
    • Must work as a team player and maintain good employee relations, actively share workload responsibilities on the shift.

    Credentials

    • Completion of secondary school or equivalent education is a minimum requirement.
    • Two to five years of previous machine shop experience, preferably in a high volume manufacturing environment.
    • Knowledge of / experience with FANUC controls is a preferred.
    • Knowledge of / experience with Makino, or Specht machines is preferred.
    • Knowledge of SPC methods, process and machine capability requirements, and lot control techniques.
    • Knowledge of metallurgy, induction heat treat processes and non-conventional processes and equipment.
    • Experience with Indramat and ABB controls is an asset.
    • Able to modify CNC programs for Machining Centres, Lathes and Special Purpose Machinery.
    • Machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials.
    • Knowledge of TS 16949 and related procedures.
    • Computer fundamentals required.
    • Basic mathematical skills.

    • Must be well organized and able to work with minimum supervision.
    • Maintain confidentiality of all information received from the customer/company.
    • Committed to continuous improvement. Maintain current certifications and engage in continuous learning in order to keep up with new developments in field. Learn continually on the job through meetings, working with others and reading work-related publications such as trade magazines and association newsletters, manufacturing reports and articles.
    • Be able to work independently, however, work as part of a team that includes other trades people and professionals to install, repair and maintain equipment.
    • Must possess good communication skills, both verbal and written
    • Must possess exceptional interpersonal skills
    • Ability to be on call, work rotating shifts and weekend work, as required
    • Must have ability to safely lift up to 40-45 lbs on a frequent basis.
