Position Details

The Faculty of Arts and Science requires the services of a qualified Technical Specialist III in a continuing full-time position, beginning as soon as possible who supports the teaching program within the Department of Biological Sciences.

The University of Lethbridge is undertaking a job classification review for Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) positions. As such, the classification level currently assigned for this position may be adjusted as a result of this project. Position Qualifications The successful candidate will have a strong and diverse background in Biological Sciences. This should include experience in a range of biological fields and approaches, including genetics, molecular and cellular biology, microbiology, plant and animal physiology, organismal biology and ecology. As well, the successful candidate will have experience culturing and maintaining a range of organisms, handling chemical and biological reagents, and diverse technical expertise including molecular biology, microbiology, and animal care. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal skills. A B.Sc. and considerable technical experience are requirements for success.

This is a full-time position that supports the teaching program within the Department of Biological Sciences. Under the supervision of and in conjunction with the Teaching Laboratory Manager, duties will include:

Testing laboratory exercises prior to student use

Setting up materials for laboratories in multiple undergraduate courses

Preparing media and reagents for laboratories

Preparing and working with a wide variety of live organisms

Supervising graduate student assistants

Training and supervising autoclave use for teaching and research.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication, organizational and problem-solving skills, and sufficient judgment to deal with unexpected changes to protocols, frequent interruptions and overlapping demands, while maintaining effective working relationships within the University community.

Preference will be given to candidates who have familiarity with the University of Lethbridge programs and systems, and experience working in a post‐secondary environment.
