Under the direction of the Supervisor, or Senior Cathodic Protection Technician, this position is responsible for conducting and supporting the installation, operation and maintenance and data gathering activities in cathodic protection systems and associated facilities throughout ATCO's Distribution and Transmission systems.

What You Get to Do:


  • Take Pipe to Soil readings and conduct Pipe Ends surveys on the Gas Distribution network, using results to assess cathodic protection effectiveness. Document and report anomalies and take remedial measures where possible.
  • Conduct Pipe to Soil Potential / CP Surveys along the Gas Transmission network, using results to assess cathodic protection effectiveness. Document and report anomalies and take remedial measures where possible.
  • Conduct rectifier inspection, troubleshooting and maintenance, and adjusting rectifier output as might be required.
  • Perform soil resistivity and current requirement testing.
  • Troubleshoot CP systems for problems such as electrical shorts in Distribution CP Boundaries, or along Transmission pipeline systems, faulted cables/broken rectifier output cables, depleted anodes etc. Conduct repairs or submit CIR's / MIR's for repairs, as required.
  • Work with Construction, Operations, Contractors and/or other CP Technicians, in installation of rectifiers, groundbeds, remote monitoring units (RMU's), test points, galvanic anodes, and other CP related equipment as required.
  • Commission and adjust new cathodic protection systems, to optimize cathodic protection effectiveness.
  • Support site investigations of corrosion leaks and/or coating quality.
  • Support the function of Damage Prevention by locating and marking CP system cables when requested by 3rd Party excavators and/or contractors.
  • Document and submit accurate performance and maintenance records, drawings, and other information related to the cathodic protection installations, testing and adjustment.
  • Participate in pipe integrity testing and research.
  • Assist District personnel and/or external customers as required. Assist in training Cathodic Protection Operators as needed. May be required to teach CP Awareness and Practices course for other Operations personnel.
  • Respond to customer complaints appropriately.
  • Operate Company vehicle in a professional and safe manner and be responsible for its appearance, cleanliness, minor maintenance and tool inventory.
  • Participate in safety programs and meetings through reporting and discussion of accidents, incidents and near misses. Willingly participate in and support worksite inspections by internal or thirdparty personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


  • Grade 12 or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Recognized as a Certified NACE CP Tester (NACE CP1) and AAIT Level 1 CP Technician.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License and inhouse operators' certificate.
  • Must have related experience and have demonstrated competencies required to work with the company's cathodic protection systems at the Technician level.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, learning ability, technical aptitude, initiative, mature judgment and responsible work habits.
  • Familiarity with the use of personal computers and software including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must understand, practice and keep abreast of changes in related company and industry standards, procedures and technology.
  • Required to travel throughout the ATCO Distribution and Transmission service territory to perform assigned duties and will stay out of town as required.
  • Must be prepared to work in all types of weather.
  • This position is a Safety-Sensitive position and has additional preemployment requirements as identified in the Alcohol & Drug Policy 6.2.3 Applicant Testing.
