Description
Description
:This first year thematic course will provide students an opportunity to examine conceptual and practical issues of access to justice, with a focus on A2J in refugees' countries of origin; in neighboring countries to which they may flee; in transit; and upon arrival in Canada. In particular, the course will examine the conditions which result in refugee migrations from Venezuela, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. For each country, the course will focus on a different refugee profile, but emphasis will be primarily on women, children and other particularly vulnerable groups. The course will also look at regional protection issues, compared and contrasted to refugee and complimentary protection available in Canada. It will consider both the legal framework for protection and whether real protection exists on the ground. In addition, students will consider the many obstacles, both legal and practical, faced by refugee claimants upon arrival in Canada as they seek to gain legal status.
