Position overview:_


The Recreation Coordinator develops and coordinates the delivery of social, recreational, therapeutic and volunteer programs consistent with the needs, interests and abilities of persons in care within the five domains: cognitive, physical, emotional, spiritual and social.

Respects and promotes the dignity and individuality of each person in care by recognizing them as individuals with unique cultural, spiritual, and psycho-social needs.

The Recreational Therapist is responsible for ensuring the department's initiatives are supportive of achieving program goals for the population, and within the Social of Model of Care utilizing the person-centered approach.

Key Activity and Summary:_


Participates as a member of the program team and develops social, recreational and therapeutic programs related to the needs, abilities, interests and choices of residents within the specified program area and as identified on the care plan.

Adjusts programs to meet the needs of changing resident populations;
Facilitates, encourages and supports resident participation in a variety of activities and therapeutic programs within the neighborhood. Promotes spontaneous interactions and mentors/guides other members of the program team to facilitate spontaneous activities;
Delivers resident activity programs including arts & crafts, domestic chores, music, cooking, gardening and physical and cognitive exercises; sets up and organizes supplies and equipment for activity projects; demonstrates the techniques of related activities for residents; oversees resident activities and documents participation observations;

Leads and mentors members of the program team in the delivery of planned and spontaneous activity programs and orientates and coordinates volunteer participation according to skills and interests.

Prepares and circulates a monthly calendar of events reflective of the changing needs, interests and abilities of residents;
Contributes information related to participation, interests, physical and cognitive functioning, challenges and social interaction to care conferences and family meetings;
Maintains inventory of equipment, tools and materials and reports malfunctioning equipment to the Site Leader/Director of Care;
Under the direction of the Site Leader/Director of Care, coordinates volunteer involvement within the program area including recruiting, scheduling, evaluating and acknowledging volunteers, evaluating effectiveness of volunteer participation within the program area and adjusting the volunteer program to meet the changing needs and interests of residents and their families;
Coordinates community outings and special events. Organizes visits from community groups, entertainers and service groups for individual and group events within assigned program areas;
Coordinates volunteer appreciation events;
Assists the program team in care and service provision as needed. Engages residents in domestic activities to maintain or enhance the homelike atmosphere within the neighborhood. Works with the Site Leader/Director of Care to organize resident/family meetings. Supports families in interactions with residents and provides information education to assist in overcoming physical or cognitive impairments; and


Respects and promotes the dignity and individuality of each resident by recognizing them as while individuals with unique cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial needs.

Performs other related tasks as assigned.


Education/Requirements/Skills:

Therapeutic Recreation Diploma;
Current First Aid/CPR C/AED certification;
Food Safe Level 1;
Non-Violence Crisis Intervention / Violence Prevention;
Experienced in conducting assessments and building programs to reflect resident needs;
Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills;
Excellent planning, organizational, and time management skills;
Excellent communicator (in English; verbal and in writing);
Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office

Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others;
Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation;
Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others;
