Summary:


Within the context of a resident, patient, client and family centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, the position promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working an environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff.


Reporting to the Director, Occupational Health & Safety, the Manager, Relational Safety & Prevention is responsible for the reduction and prevention of workplace violence and injury by planning, organizing, and directing Providence Health Care's (PHC) relational safety and security operations and the Relational Security Officer team.

Grounded in the principles and practices of trauma-informed care, Indigenous cultural safety and humility, and equity, diversity and inclusion, the Manager leads the development, implementation and continuous improvement of PHC's relational safety and security operations, including: developing and implementing relevant policies and procedures in the areas of relational safety and security; developing corporate-wide relational safety and security education and orientation; developing effective event reporting systems and incident debriefing, investigation and follow-up; and ensuring effective service delivery by monitoring key indicators and reporting.


The Manager liaises with internal partners including the Occupational Health & Safety team, Indigenous Wellness and Reconciliation, Professional Practice, Operations Directors, Managers, Department Heads, physicians, and others to provide support and advice and to influence decisions regarding relational safety and security awareness, violence and injury prevention, regulatory compliance, and related issues.

External contacts include WorkSafe BC, SWITCH BC, the Ministry of Health, Vancouver Police Department, Industry Committees, Health Care Unions, and other health care organizations, as well as academic institutions.


Qualifications / Skills and Education:
Education, Training and Experience


Master's degree in a health sciences discipline, business or education, with a diploma in Occupational Health & Safety plus seven (7) to ten (10) years' progressive experience in a large multi-union organization or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Comprehensive knowledge in the principles and practices of violence prevention, deescalation and relational safety.
  • Knowledge in traumainformed care, Indigenous cultural safety and humility, equity, diversity and inclusion, and antiracism.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with diverse and marginalized residents, patients, clients and families using a strengthsbased approach that demonstrates respect and the inherent dignity of each person.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage relationally and facilitate empowerment, voice and choice for diverse and marginalized residents, patients, clients and families.
  • Ability to develop and maintain a work environment that is free from racism and discrimination and values diversity.
  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to promote and enhance services provided.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety and human resource theories/practices, legislation as well an understanding of a complex multiunion healthcare environment to identify, develop and implement strategies and initiatives, ensuring compliance with service level agreements.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of program management, especially in relation to education and development.
  • Ability to identify emerging initiatives, trends and industry best practices and ensures full consideration in the development and implementation of service delivery goals and objectives.
  • Ability to provide leadership, supervision, coaching and advice to others.
  • Ability to organize work of self, identifying and managing multiple and complex priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure with minimum supervision.
