Job Overview


Reporting to the Regional Safety Manager, as the
Construction Safety Officer
(Coach) you are first and foremost a coach, whose main goal is removing the barriers between safety and operations and helping teams deliver safe production.

You are a support person that will have care for our team as a core value.

The primary focus of our Qualico safety team is to move the focus from a compliance-based approach to emphasize a care-centered approach, for our team.

While a part of safety will always involve enforcement of employee and contractor compliance with occupational health and safety rules in the workplace, the Construction Safety Officer will mainly focus on inculcating a commitment to safety into employees and contractors and providing them with support and resources.


Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Visiting worksites and engaging with employees and contractors, to build trust and cooperation.
  • Acting as a resource for and coaching all stakeholders contractors, employees, the safety team and other Qualico safety professionals.
  • Identifying and documenting opportunities for improvement and engaging all parties in implementing solutions.
  • Participating as a facilitator in safety conversations, such as toolbox talks, new employee orientations, training sessions, proactive or post event learning teams.
  • Administering first aid as required and appropriate, providing transportation to clinic if needed, cooperating with the claims coordinators in identifying and providing employee access to medical services.
  • Working cooperatively with the other members of the immediate safety team and other safety professionals in other Qualico business units, in various cross organizational projects (audits, meetings, documentation reviews, site inspections, etc).
  • Leading or assisting internal audit processes of various businesses within Qualico.
  • Analyzing unplanned events and working with all parties to identify and implement solutions to prevent reoccurrence and improve the safety program.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Formal safety education and/or Certification.
  • Standard First Aid Certification.
  • Formal training and a good understanding of event analysis (aka accident investigation).
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Safety II, Safety Differently, Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
  • Facilitation skills able to speak in front of groups and facilitate presentations.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the construction industry.
  • Valid driver's licence and access to reliable vehicle.
  • Satisfactory verification of criminal record check.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint and PowerPoint) and various safety and data collection apps.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the residential construction industry is considered an asset.

Work Conditions
You primarily work outdoors on job sites during regular business hours.

Work is mobile with exposure to potential accidents or occupational hazards as well as dealing with inclement weather, heights, dust and noise.

Occasional weekend or evening work may be required. Actions taken and decisions made directly impact the safety and health of others. Overtime may be required during the busy season.
