Assistant Deputy Fire Marshal, Training and Certification.


This is a unique opportunity for a dynamic professional to lead a team responsible for managing and modernizing educational and training programs and certification testing offered to the Ontario fire service through the Ontario Fire College and the Academic Standards and Evaluation Unit.

The

Ontario Fire College's primary mandate is to meet the education and training needs of the Ontario fire service. The College offers programs and courses throughout the province which are based on the National Fire Protection Association standards.

The

Academic Standards and Evaluation Unit is responsible for written testing, practical evaluations and other assessment methods for certification courses. The Office of the Fire Marshal is accredited by both the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (ProBoard).

What can I expect to do in this role?: As the

Assistant Deputy Fire Marshal, Training and Certification, you will:

  • provide leadership in the delivery of training and certification for the Ontario fire service.
- manage the operations of the Ontario Fire College by ensuring effective and efficient administration of financial and human resources, ongoing quality service improvements, as well as supervising the delivery of academically-sound programs.
- provide leadership to the operations of the Academic Standards and Evaluation Section in addition to the testing and certification process for the Ontario fire service in conjunction with third party accreditation bodies as the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
- play a vital role in support of Ontario fire service training needs through advice and assistance and support of training delivery through a number of modes including online, Regional Training Centres and learning contracts.
- provide academic leadership in the promotion of innovative uses of technology for the delivery of training programs and evaluation systems.
- demonstrate the
leadership behaviours, attributes and mindset for leaders, across the organization, to lead the OPS into the future and deliver our vision.


How do I qualify?:

  • You have experience with strategic planning and operational management, including financial planning, budgeting as well as managing workload and human resources.
  • You have demonstrated success in fostering an environment of continuous improvement, creativity and excellence.
  • You have had success in motivating and building relationships with a diverse team of highly professional, technical and administrative staff.
  • You are an innovative leader who seeks opportunities to mentor and coach staff and improve programs and systems.

Technical Expertise and Specialized Knowledge:


  • You have demonstrated indepth knowledge of adult educational principles and practices to provide guidance in the development and delivery of educational and training programs and services.
  • You have expert knowledge of the functions, operations, and current issues of the Ontario municipal fire services including the unique needs of fulltime and volunteer components to ensure educational/training programs and short/long term plans meet the needs of the fire service community.
  • You have knowledge of municipal government and relevant regulations and legislation (i.e., Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Fire Code, etc.) as well as professional and technical standards (i.e. National Fire Protection Association, etc.) affecting the provision of fire protection services for Ontario's communities.
