The Rotman Research Institute (RRI) is a premier international centre for the study of human brain function.

The RRI advances the understanding of human brain structure and function in critical areas of cognitive neuroscience, including perception, memory, language, attention, and decision making.

With a primary focus on aging and brain health, RRI scientists and trainees, and other clinician researchers across Baycrest, promote and impact effective care and improved quality of life for older adults through research into age
- and disease-related behavioural and neural changes.


Reporting to the Vice President, Administration and Operations, Baycrest Academy for Research and Education the Manager, Research Ethics and Participation is responsible for the day-to-day operation of key components of the research process.

These processes include recruitment and retention of volunteer research participants, the management and oversight of the use of the continued development of the Baycrest client registry and the research ethics office.

The Manager provides administrative leadership for the ethical review of research involving humans by the Baycrest Research Ethics Board (REB), human research ethics review, consultation and education of Baycrest staff regarding the research ethics review process and works closely with the REB Chair to provide leadership and guidance in the development and maintenance of Baycrest's human research protection program.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Monitors ethical approval contingencies resulting from Research Ethics Board (REB) review, such as revision requests, responses to comments and so forth.
  • Attends meetings of the Research Ethics Board, with participation as deemed appropriate by the REB Chair.
  • Develops, in consultation with the REB Chair, education programs for REB members and staff conducting research and leads the delivery of these programs.
  • Refines standard operating procedures and other administrative requirements for the efficient and effective operation of the Office of Research Ethics, in consultation with the REB Chair, REB members, and senior Academy leadership, as appropriate.
  • Works with the Baycrest Clinical Ethics to support an overarching ethical framework for patientbased research across all Baycrest entities.
  • Monitors developments in ethics review policies and procedures in the local, national and international context identifying trends and issues for discussion with or consideration by Vice President, Administration and Operations, and senior leadership.
  • Serves as the Institutional representative for the Clinical Trials Ontario REB and the Toronto Academic Health Sciences Network Administrators working groups.
  • Manages all components of the Academy's participant recruitment and retention program.
  • Develops the strategy for recruitment and retention of research participants in consultation with researchers and in line with the Academy's strategic plan.
  • In partnership with Research Information Technology, oversees the continued development and refinement of the volunteer research participant database and the Baycrest Client Registry to ensure that changing database requirements are addressed and implemented.
  • Ensures that standards of data privacy and confidentiality are maintained.
  • Conducts annual user satisfaction surveys to ensure that the needs of the researchers are being met and changing requirements are reviewed and addressed.

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Sc. in Psychology, Neuroscience or related disciplines.
  • Thorough understanding of research methodologies and processes through experience as a Research Assistant or Research Project Coordinator.
  • Experience working with individuals with varying knowledge of research ethics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to distill complex information into clear, concise messages.
  • Ability to influence others and to establish credibility at all levels of the organization; challenging status quo.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of technical and research information procedures for analysis and interpretation in a healthcare environment.
  • Welldeveloped leadership, client relations, and problemsolving abilities.
  • Comfortable working in a team.
