Job Summary:


The main objective of the Summer Collections Assistant position is to assist with conducting an artifact inventory of the Benares Storage.

This requires physically checking each artifact, creating new barcode labels, taking photographs as needed, and updating our Past Perfect database.

As well, condition reports on random artifacts from the collection will be created and entered into our database.

The final objective would be for the research and development of 15 (1-page) biographies of personalities from Mississauga to augment our database.


Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Collections Supervisor, the Summer Collections Assistant will:

  • Work as part of a team to complete an artifact inventory of the storage at Benares Visitor Centre as well as create 75 condition reports.
  • Using Past Perfect database, tasks will also include data entry, historical research, scanning and/or taking digital images, and barcoding
  • Assist with research and development of 15 (1 page) biographies of personalities from Mississauga's past to augment our database.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:


  • Must be a student working towards or planning to pursue a museum degree with a background in museum studies, history, or archival studies
  • Working knowledge of Past Perfect would be an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent data entry, research, and computer skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian History would be an asset
  • Familiarity with Mississauga history would be an asset
  • Access to a vehicle is an asset
  • Be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Be between 16 and 30 years of age to start employment;
  • Have registered as a high school, college, CEGEP or university student ( as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW assignment;
  • Intend to return to studies during or after the YCW work assignment;
  • Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; And not have another fulltime job during the YCW assignmentHourly Rate/Salary:
