  • The Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) works within a needs based and inclusive approach with assigned students in schools and is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help design and carry out proactive, evidence based programming for students who will benefit from social, emotional and behavior programs and supports.
Minimum Requirements - Completion of a post-secondary diploma or certificate in a related scope of practice such as Bachelor of Arts (Child and Youth Study, Sociology, Psychology) or

Nova Scotia Community College:
Child & Youth Care Practitioner Program diploma from an accredited program is required.

The diploma or certificate includes study focused on: growth and development, relational child and youth care practices and ethics, principles of behavior, activity based interventions and observation skills.


  • Valid driver's license.
  • Minimum of two years' experience working with school aged children and youth
  • Acceptable combination of education and experience
Additional Assets - Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting

  • Direct knowledge of and experience with the community served
  • Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Experience developing and facilitating programs and groups with children and youth (small group and school/classroom wide)
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Membership in the NS Child and Youth Care Workers' Association

JOB GOAL:
Within a needs based and inclusive approach, the Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYCP) works with students in schools and is responsible for collaborating with school teams to help design and carry out proactive, evidence-based programming, with in the MTSS framework, for students who have social, emotional and behavior issues


This may include:
- working with students directly in education settings, supporting students who have difficulty coping in school/education settings

  • Working collaboratively with SchoolsPlus staff, administrators, classroom teachers, educational assistants, specialist staff, communitybased agencies, programs, services and supports
  • Assisting students to develop social skills and selfregulation and engage in prosocial activities through recreation, summer and after school programs

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establish proactive relationships with and provide appropriate interventions for vulnerable children and youth impacted by developmental trauma and or behaviour, social and mental health challenges.-Collaborate in program planning (e.g., attending and participating in school-based meetings (e.g., Teaching Support Team, Student Planning Team, Transition) and interagency meetings) to support well-being of and success for students. Follow-up on actions agreed to.
  • Use approaches such as functional analysis of behavior under the direction of a school specialist (e.g., School Psychologist)
  • Coordinate and contribute to the effective implementation of strategies and good practices, such as a positive reinforcement system, visual schedule, movement breaks, etc.
  • Contribute to building a healthy and safe school environment by supporting positive behaviors
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, educational assistants, administrators, specialists and others to support the implementation of appropriate interventions and programming for students.
  • Engage in continuing education and professional development.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and conditions of employment as per

EVALUATION:


Performance of this position will be evaluated per the Chignecto-Central Regional Centre for Education's Personnel Performance Program that may include feedback from administrators, school-based specialists, and public comments as received.
