    Shift Work Required: Yes (Evenings and weekends as required)
    Rate of Pay: $32.26 per hour (Rate in effect as of April 1, 2024)

    Characteristic Duties: Under the general supervision of a Superintendent of Horticulture.

    1. Oversee the work of Summer Student and Park Attendant in the performance of routine duties, restoration and landscape projects.
    2. Assist with yearly plant requirements, horticultural planning and staff schedules as required.
    3. Prepare, install, develop, improve and maintain all forms of horticultural, turf grass and landscaped areas including annual/perennial/shrub beds, ornamental trees, hedges, planters pathways, lock stone and retaining walls.
    4. Inspect plant material on a regular basis for deficiencies; utilize fertilizers and soil amendments appropriately.
    5. Maintain a high level of neatness within facilities and properties; ensure that litter is removed on a regular basis and buildings are safe.
    6. Maintain daily records and logs.
    7. Maintain tools, equipment and storage areas in a proper state of repair, order and cleanliness.
    8. Maintain supplies required for daily operations and record daily progress on crew cards.
    9. Work with staff and volunteers in support of special events and landscape projects.
    10. Work evenings and weekends as required.
    11. Develop and maintain a thorough working knowledge of CGS's Safety Manual and the applicable Provincial Legislation listed therein.
    12. Perform other related duties as required.

    Qualifications:


    • Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade XII) Education.

    • Successful completion of a Diploma or Certificate in Horticulture or a closely related program from a recognized institution with Canadian accreditation. Certificate programs must be equivalent to one (1) year of full time study

    • Minimum of three (3) years of direct experience as a practising gardener in a municipal or commercial grounds maintenance setting with proven dependability in a supervisory capacity.

    • Working knowledge of a wide range of horticulture, landscape and turf maintenance tools and equipment.

    • Demonstrate ability to work independently without supervision or as part of a team.

    • Proven ability to work in a physically demanding position, outdoors in all weather conditions.

    • Land exterminator Class 1 and 3 would be an asset.

    • Excellent use of English; verbally and in writing.

    • Satisfactory health, attendance and former employment history.

    • Provide at own cost, a Criminal Record Check.

    • Must be physically capable of operating a vehicle safely, possess a valid driver's licence and have an acceptable driving record.
