About the Role

In this executive leadership role, you will play a critical part in people leadership and department, strategic, financial and corporate services leadership with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region.


You will make a difference by providing fiscal strategic leadership - overseeing the financial planning and reporting of the organization.

You will also lead the organization's corporate services portfolio which includes risk management as well as building & office services.


Reporting directly to, and working closely with, the President & CEO, this position is a valued member of the Executive Leadership Team working cross-departmentally and leads the organization's Finance & Corporate Services department.


The Day to Day and Beyond:

  • Leads the Finance Department (comprised of 6 team members) which is responsible for items such as: cash management, receipts and receivables, purchases and payables, payroll, capital asset tracking, revenue recognition, investment management, financial projections, budgeting, financial planning & analysis, tax reporting, variance analysis, grant reporting, charitable receipt issuance, account reconciliations, United Way membership financial compliance.
  • Supports Finance operations by reviewing financial reports, approving significant financial adjustments, advising on nontypical transactions, and consolidating and interpreting financial information.
  • Supports the Finance & Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, including reporting and presenting financial information of the organization. (Quarterly cycle).
  • Reviews and presents yearend financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate policies and programs for effective financial management of the organization and monitors compliance.
  • Oversees the development and management of the organization's annual budget in alignment with the annual action plan that drives our strategy.
  • Leads the Risk Management portfolio of the organization including collaborating with internal stakeholders to identify and assess organizational risks, develop, and implement risk mitigation strategies, and evaluate effectiveness of implemented strategies. This portfolio also includes Contract Management for the organization from a business risk perspective.
  • Oversees operations of Building and Office Services for both United Way locations in the Alberta Capital Region
  • Oversees the engagement of third party services and reviews and approves vendor contracts.
  • Acts as an emergency contact for building security.
  • Leads the development and approves the annual department plan. Monitors plan progress and evaluates results.
  • Oversees department projects and ensures work is progressing efficiently and supports operational and strategic goals.

About you:


We will be implementing new accounting software and the processes to go with it, so it would be an asset if you were savvy, and had previous experience with, software implementation - this would be nice to have, but not a requirement.

You have a can-do attitude, are outcomes driven, and approach situations with a positive mindset, empathy, and collaboration. Thinking creatively, finding solutions, developing innovative ideas, and building relationships is how you thrive.

You are comfortable operating in a digital environment and are proficient with MS Office (we use Office 36- MS Teams, SharePoint), and enjoy learning and using new technology.


Your background includes a post-secondary degree in in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related field plus a minimum of fourteen (14) to sixteen (16) years of related experience, and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of related leadership experience.

CPA designation is required and certificate in Risk Management is considered an asset. A combination of education and lived experience are also welcomed
