Main Purpose & Function

Reporting to the Technical Supervisor, the Survey Assistant II assists in carrying out varied survey duties and assignments including field and office related tasks.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist Surveyor to carry out field and office tasks related to different survey assignments
  • Perform physical activities in all weather conditions such as carrying equipment, climbing ladders and lifting heavy objects.
  • Perform work on active construction sites in close proximity to trench excavations and heavy duty equipment
  • Perform mathematical survey calculations and prepare field notes and sketches as necessary
  • Operate survey equipment such as total stations, data collectors, autolevels, and basic hand tools
  • Care for and properly maintain tools and equipment
  • Locate survey markers and utility covers, clearing brush and other obstacles as necessary.
  • Assist with implementing traffic control plans and carrying out confined space entries
  • Research and provide technical information regarding sewer and water infrastructure for other city staff
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by courses related to the work and some related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in the operation of survey instruments and tools.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of municipal sewer and drainage systems
  • Working knowledge of survey methods, technology, and equipment used in municipal survey work
  • Working knowledge of common office software and protocols
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and produce clear and accurate field notes
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining cooperative and effective working relationships with other staff
  • Ability to perform physical work such as lifting heavy objects and carrying equipment and tools
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, on active construction sites, and in proximity of vehicle traffic
  • Ability to accurately read and interpret engineering drawings and legal survey information
  • Ability to multitask, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to collaborate within a team environment
  • Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with others

Driver's License and Record Checks:

  • A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and a Satisfactory National Safety Code driving record


The City's COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time.

However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
