School Based Administrative Assistants are members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, Local 53 (NSGEU). The NSGEU collective agreement can be accessed by clicking HERE.


The School Based Administrative Assistant shall provide the required administrative support to the school in all aspects of its day to day operations.

A School Based Administrative Assistant works in a team-based environment and displays a high degree of professionalism and diplomacy in dealing with the general public, students, staff, volunteers and outside agencies.

Consistent with Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and Halifax Regional Centre for Education policies, the Administrative Assistant will work within an established accountability framework to ensure maximum results are achieved in delivering support services to schools.

Working collaboratively within the school, the Administrative Assistant reports directly to the School Principal.


Qualifications:

a) Completion of a diploma/certificate program from a recognized institution in Office Administration/Management, Secretarial Science, or an acceptable equivalent obtained through relevant job training and experience;
b) Minimum two (2) years recent experience in a fast-paced office environment utilizing an advanced computer system with proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and databases;
c) Willingness to train in job-related software programs including an advanced Student Information System, accounting software and website maintenance required.


Rate of Pay:

The starting hourly rate is $24.20.

Rates are based on a five (5) step scale with step increases occurring annually in accordance with the Collective Agreement as shown below.

This is a 10-month per year position with a work schedule in accordance with the school year calendar which includes time off at Christmas and March Break.

Permanent Administrative Assistants (10-month) remain at the same site annually and are placed on layoff when school is not in session for the months of July and August (unpaid period).


Hours of Work:


Seven (7) hours per day (excluding lunch) totalling 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m.

and 4:30 p.m.

Administrative Assistants are entitled to an unpaid lunch break of at least one-half (1/2) hour and up to one (1) hour to be scheduled in consultation with the immediate supervisor.

In accordance with Article b) of the NSGEU Collective Agreement the start date of the position may vary from the date listed above should the successful applicant be a bargaining unit employee.
