    About the Opportunity

J.E. Anderson & Associates is looking for a full-time Field Survey Technician/Crew Chief based in Campbell River, BC, supporting projects across Central and Northern Vancouver Island and surrounding islands.

Reporting to the BC Land Surveyor in the Campbell River office, you will play a key role in delivering accurate, well-documented field survey work, including data collection, field notes, and calculations, while supporting drafting and other office-related tasks as needed and as your skills permit.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Conducting field survey work, including data collection, field notes, and calculations
    • Completing legal survey work including Land Title Act, Strata Property Act, Land Act, and Canada Lands surveys
    • Performing topographic, construction, and engineering surveys in urban and rural environments
    • Working independently or leading a survey field crew, depending on project needs and equipment requirements
    • Operating conventional instruments, robotic total stations, and GNSS equipment
    • Interpreting legal plans, field notes, and construction drawings to support accurate field execution
    • Liaising professionally with project managers, contractors, clients, and members of the public
    • Supporting drafting and office-based tasks during periods of inclement weather or as workload requires
    • Travelling locally across the region as needed, including projects in the Comox Valley, Port McNeill, Gold River, and nearby islands such as Quadra and Cortes

    About You

To qualify, you will need relevant hands-on experience conducting survey fieldwork, or a combination of practical experience and post-secondary education in geomatics, civil engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates with Crew Chief experience are strongly preferred; however, experienced Survey Assistants with the capability and readiness to take on a lead field role will also be considered.

    The following are required:

    • A valid driver's license and a clean driver's abstract
    • Ability and willingness to travel locally for project needs, including ferry travel to nearby islands
    • Willingness to work in variable terrain, weather conditions, and rural or remote environments

Additionally, the following skills/attributes and background are highly valued:

    • Experience completing legal survey work under the Land Title Act, Strata Property Act, Land Act, or Canada Lands Surveys
    • Proficiency using survey equipment such as conventional instruments, robotic total stations, and GNSS systems
    • Experience with Leica equipment and software such as Captivate and Infinity, or comparable platforms
    • Ability to interpret legal plans, construction drawings, and field notes accurately
    • Experience supporting drafting or office-based survey tasks using CAD-based software such as MicroSurvey or Civil 3D
    • Comfort communicating directly with contractors, clients, property owners, and members of the public

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong judgment, clear communication skills, and the confidence to make sound decisions in the field while knowing when to check in with the office for guidance. You are organized, dependable, and personable, with the ability to represent the company professionally in both residential and construction environments.

This is an important field-based role within a small, collaborative team, suited to someone who enjoys autonomy, values practical experience, and takes pride in delivering high-quality work that directly supports local communities across Vancouver Island.
