The Position


Reporting to the K-12 Education Manager, this position is responsible for managing the Alternative School and Gibsons case list to prioritize, determine and support the needs of Nation students with a forward-looking approach to the development of the shíshálh Nation.


This is a temporary full-time position until November 15, 2024.

  • Develop and implement annual CORE plans and related budgets for the Alternative School and Gibsons student case list of the Education Division and its various programs and initiatives.
  • Plan and coordinate with the recreation coordinator and wellness Centre staff programs that support the overall wellbeing of Alternative School and Gibsons shíshálh Nation students.
  • Coordinate tutoring services for Alternative School and Gibsons students as requested.
  • Ensure quality assurance and all requirements are met within the Education Division.
  • Maintain case notes and action plans for each student on the case list.
  • Connect with various departments and partners to support an individual student.
  • Monitor activities (mental health checkins, academic checkins) weekly to monthly depending on the needs of the Alternative School and Gibsons shíshálh Nation students.
  • Review action plans weekly and provide weekly/daily (if immediate action is needed) feedback to the Education Director and/or the K12 Education Manager on necessary action for the benefit of shíshálh Nation students. Work with other internal departments to ensure reporting deadlines and requirements are met. Provide quarterly reports to the K12 Education Department, Council, and Management.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in education, social work, or a related field is required.
  • At least 2 years of classroom experience and 2 years of case management experience, or any satisfactory combination of experience and training demonstrating the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the role successfully.
  • A comprehensive understanding of First Nations in Alternative Schools and First Nations issues in BC.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of First Nations people and how culture impacts children's development. Ability to relate to students of various ages and cognitive abilities.
  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, and training methods used in education in Alternative Schools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and proven ability to establish rapport with people of all educational and occupational backgrounds.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a Criminal Record Check including a vulnerable sector check.
  • Willingness to learn about shíshálh cultural protocols and traditions.
