About the role


SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, the Control Room Operator (CRO) will monitor, adjust, correct, record logs, and control the operation of the energy from the waste facility.

CRO will perform tests on water treatment samples, monitor and control the operation of turbo generation equipment along with steam distribution systems, and communicate changes required to the Auxiliary Operators, Crane, and Utility Operators.

CRO will monitor the CEMs of the facility to ensure environmental compliance. CRO will report all abnormal conditions and maintenance requirements to the Shift Supervisor.


DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:


Under the direction of the Shift Supervisor, the Control Room Operator (CRO) at Covanta Durham York Facility is to monitor and control the entire facility's operations, power generation, water treatment, APC, and Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEMs) using a DCS, PLC and other SCADA systems in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.


The CRO will use the plant control systems to operate the facility's water treatment, boilers, combustion control steam distribution, turbo power generation, standby fire pumps, fire system, plant air compressions and plant air distribution, A.P.C.

system, and ash handling. The CRO will strive to maximize the facility's efficient operation.

  • Provide functional direction to the Crane Equipment Operator and the Auxiliary Operators (AO) to make changes, adjustments, minor maintenance, and investigate operating conditions as required.
  • The CRO will maintain a detailed operating log of the facility's operations and enter work requests in the facility's CMMS (Maximo) system.
  • The CRO will keep the Shift Supervisor abreast of any operating conditions that may affect the safety of staff and visitors.
  • The CRO will keep the Shift Supervisor abreast of any operating conditions that may affect the environment.
  • Conduct routine and record feed water and closedloop cooling water tests and recommend adjustments to the AO.
  • Maintain the control room signin log for contractors and lock outboard systems.
  • The CRO may be a point of contact for Hydro One, the Ministry of Environment, the Client, and all offhours phone calls.
  • The CRO will be called upon to provide training for trainees and give oral presentations to guests of the facility.
  • Must comply with all Covanta policies and procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The CRO provides functional direction only in the operation of the facility and auxiliary equipment.

This person must be able to communicate freely with a wide range of people, from other Covanta employees, our clients, and guests to the facility.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Must be able to monitor several conditions at the same time and stay informed through the control systems of the impact each process variable contributes to the overall operation.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to take appropriate, safe action on his/her own initiative to prevent injury to personnel, environment noncompliance, and equipment damage or during emergencies or unusual situations.

Ability to mentor employees and get along with people.
