Position Overview:

  • As the Plumber within Kitchener Utilities, you will be responsible for performing a variety of skilled and manual work related to the maintenance, installation and repair of the City's water meters to ensure proper operation

Responsibilities:


  • Performs a full range of general maintenance and repair duties related to the City's water meters.
  • Performs a full range of meter maintenance, repair and exchange duties on positive displacement, compound, mag, and turbine meters.
  • Repairs leaks; tests and replaces meters of various sizes.
  • Accounts for the installation/inspections of meters.
  • Reads meters and performs shut offs as required.
  • Install all sizes of water meters, some meters in pits and confined spaces.
  • Provides courteous customer service; responds to questions and complaints from the general public as it relates to minor leak repairs and consumption (including investigations).
  • Conducts water meter sizing for larger water users.
  • Performs accuracy verification on meters.
  • Backup crew leader duties, as required.
  • Conducts high water consumption investigation.
  • Track and dispense water meters to contractors for new construction.
  • Maintains documentation related to work performed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:


  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Minimum one (1) year related experience (i.e., installing, repairing, replacing, and conducting accuracy verifications on positive displacement meters).
  • Valid "G" Class driver's license in good standing
  • Must possess a valid plumber's certificate of qualification (306A).
  • Must have knowledge of mag type water meters.
  • Must have knowledge of installation, repair, replacing and accuracy verification practices for onsite and inhouse compound and turbine meters.
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge of applicable requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.
  • Must have proven experience in the maintenance and repair of water infrastructure including meters and service pipes.
  • Must have working knowledge of relevant Federal, Provincial and Municipal codes, laws and regulations.
  • Must have proven ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Must have a proven ability to perform mathematical calculations as required.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying weights up to 60lbs,
  • Must have effective listening, verbal & written communication skills with the ability to keep accurate records.
  • Must have proven customer service skills.
  • Must have the ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Must be able to work in varied environments and weather conditions.
  • Must have the ability to support and project values compatible with the organization.
  • Must be willing and able to successfully complete training as required.
  • Must be willing to successfully complete a medical examination if required.
  • Must be able to work weekends and shift work.
  • Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
