Associate Dean, Social Services and Justice


Mohawk College educates and serves more than 31,700 full-time, part-time, apprenticeship and international students at three main campuses in Hamilton, at learning hubs across Hamilton through City School by Mohawk, and at the college's Aviation Facility at Hamilton International Airport.

Reporting to the Dean, School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Community Services, the incumbent will be responsible for providing academic, financial and strategic planning leadership in the Department of Social Services and Justice Studies overseeing the following programs: Social Service Worker, Social Service Worker - Intensive, Concurrent Disorders, Police Foundations, Community & Justice Services, Protection, Security and Investigation, Advanced Police Studies, Paralegal, and Health, Wellness and Fitness programs.

Responsibility for these programs includes the supervision and management of approximately 75 full-time and part-time faculty and support staff, the quality of education provided to about 1100 students, the distribution of and use of all resources in the department.

In addition, this position will have an emphasis on outreach to the community, business and industry for the purposes of promoting positive community relations, partnerships and work integrated learning in the community.


The incumbent will facilitate the on-going review of existing programs, academic quality and integrity, student success, faculty and support staff performance and the development of new programs and courses to reflect market changes and the employment needs of learners and industry.

In addition, the Associate Dean conducts investigations of complaints from students and staff, and initiates the problem-solving process and establishes positive relationships with industry and business representatives and provides support to the College's student recruitment and job placement initiatives.


Specifically, you will:

  • Provide academic and administrative leadership to Faculty and Staff involved in the development and delivery of courses and programs offered in the Social Services and Justice Studies portfolio, under the general direction of the Dean.
  • Contribute to the academic wellbeing of the College through competent planning and administration of the Department's programs and service courses, including quality assurance processes such as comprehensive program reviews.
  • Ensure that the current and future educational needs of students are met by providing the ongoing review of courses; determining the needs for modification of existing courses/programs; and the introduction of new programs and courses.
  • Promote community ventures and educational pathways through networks and develops partnership agreements through Program Advisory Committees, agreements and projects.
  • Develop operational policies and procedures for the Department's programs to meet the needs of students, client groups, community partners, and government ministries/agencies.
  • Maintain a high level of staff performance through effective recruiting, selecting, developing, motivating, evaluating, and training of Faculty and Staff.
  • Promote and support the ongoing professional development for Faculty and Staff.
  • Administer the activities of the Faculty in their teaching assignments and create an effective working environment for the Staff, the teaching & learning process, and ensures that assignments are consistent with college policies and procedures.
  • Together with the support of the Operation's Manager, prepare the initial budget for the Department's programs for submissions to the Dean, as part of the College's overall budget process.
