    Field Operations and Safety Manager

    Location: Fort McMurray, AB

    Reporting directly to the Field Operations Team Lead, the Field Operations and Safety Manager (FOSM) will be responsible for supervising a team of drivers who are dedicated to client service in a manner consistent with DTL's Health, Safety and Environmental Program. Relationship management will be a key success factor as you deal with day-to-day issues with our clients and operators and embody the values of operational excellence and team leadership. The FOSM is tasked with the promotion and delivery of the Health, Safety and Environmental Management Program. FOSMs will conduct investigations and assist other departments in conducting investigations, ensuring that DTL systems are constantly applied and improving to meet or exceed company, legislated and client requirements. Regular interaction with union representatives should be expected as well as involvement in any grievance, performance and disciplinary issues that may arise, including thorough incident investigations. FOSMs will be the first to respond to safety and environmental incident management, spill remediation, and traffic control when required.

    Work Shift:

    Monday - Friday shift, 14:00 - 23:00 (evenings)

    Qualifications & Skills Required:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to make decisions and lead organizational change
  • A team player with the ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships within all levels of the organization
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage a fluctuating workload and set priorities to meet deadline
  • Knowledge in identifying hazards, analyzing safety information, and root cause analysis
  • Self-motivated, able to work with limited direction or supervision
  • Ability to read, interpret, and communicate policies, programs and regulations
  • Knowledge of applicable HSE regulations, codes, practices and standards
  • Strong computer skills are required; familiarity with Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and multi-tasking environment
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Traffic Safety Act and supporting transportation regulations
  • Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Effectively communicate with customers, local partners, operations, maintenance, and training departments
  • Manage service levels to ensure that performance meets our customer's operational requirements, developing contingency plans to accommodate their needs
  • Support the attraction and retention of qualified drivers
  • Perform various analyses of the division's activities to ensure the division meets its financial and operational objectives, including KPI trends and root causes
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of drivers to ensure they meet both company standards as well as customer requirements
  • Communicate with and dispatch drivers daily
  • Lead the implementation of HSE initiatives and processes to build an organization-wide safety culture
  • Lead, mentor and communicate with co-workers on the Health and Safety Management System and Environmental Management System
  • Be visible and actively participate in daily service delivery
  • Serve as incident investigation team lead by taking on a command role in incident situations
  • Create detailed documentation of incident files to ensure compliance with regulatory and client audits and in support of business processes as well as in-house trending
  • Assist with employee meetings and on-site orientation sessions
  • Conduct, document and communicate risk, hazard and route assessments
  • Ensure that personal protective equipment is used following manufacturer's instructions as well as the company and client policies
  • Years of Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar role is required
  • Education Requirements:

  • Minimum 2-year Post-Secondary education or designation in Business Management, Logistics or Safety is required
  • CSO, BSO or OSSA Regional certification is required
  • Certificate in Incident and Accident Investigation, Hazard Management and/or Health & Safety Leadership is considered an asset
  • Valid class 1 or 2Q driver's license with clean driver's abstract
  • Experience in the transportation industry is considered an asset
  • Knowledge in coaching, motivational and adult education skills would be an asset
  • First Aid/CPR is considered an asset
