The Toronto office of Smith + Andersen is seeking a Project Manager for our Building Assessment and Improvement group (BAIG).

The Project Manager is responsible for managing the technical and financial aspects of the project while collaborating with cross functional teams to get deliverables to the finish line.


Does this sound like you? If so, here are some of the more detailed responsibilities you can expect in this position:

  • Prepare, or assists Principal-in-charge with, the development of all system-engineering concepts (e.g. design brief) and concept report. Reviews and manages the design in terms of construction budgets.
  • Perform, or arranges for, reviews of existing installation and interprets/manages the impact on the project.
  • Prepare all calculations and selects all equipment. Delegate and assign tasks to designers and CAD Technicians where appropriate.
  • Responsible for reviewing all deliverables for the project whether reports, calculations, drawings, or/and specifications. Review for completeness and accuracy at various stages of development and as defined by internal total quality management.
  • Promote and enforces company standards relating to project administration, documentation and processes such as total quality management.
  • Where requested by the Principalincharge or Associate Principal act as contract administrator for designated projects, ensuring timely completion of all contract administration activities for project.
  • Ensure that shop drawing review process takes place within project timelines.
  • Coordinate with the contract administration team regarding drawing reviews, proper set up of contract administration process and site activities.
  • Prepare all change notices or reviews change notices issued by contract administration team.
  • Responsible for ensuring tasks are completed both accurately and with the assigned hours/fee.
  • Respond to both technical and financial queries related to the project.
  • Keep the Principalincharge or Associate Principal advised of all changes in scope of work and prepares amendments to the contract (e.g. Request of Additional feeRAF) for review and submission to client.
  • Prepare and continually monitors a schedule of tasks required to complete the project including hours to perform tasks and critical data required for performance.
  • Liaise with external consultants, vendors as required to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned

A few more qualifications which will help you with these responsibilities:

  • Possess 5 or more years of project engineering experience in the field of mechanical building services including working on mechanical retrofit projects and mechanical system upgrade projects (chiller plants, boiler plants, ventilation systems, fire protection, plumbing/drainage systems).
  • Experience in mechanical assessments, reports and building condition surveys.
  • Experience with AutoCAD MEP
  • Experience in mentoring and/or leading a team of designers/CAD teams.
  • Professional designation would be considered an asset (P.Eng., C.E.T) or working towards attain it.
  • LEED certification / experience implementing sustainable design (LEED projects) is an asset.
  • Strong communication skills as demonstrated through client and staff relations.
  • Advanced working knowledge of the provincial building code, ASHRAE, CSA and NFPA standards.
  • Proven the ability to work in an environment driven by project deadlines.
