    Temporary Acting Head Caretaker
    John's College, Brantford
    Afternoon Shift (3:30pm - 11:30pm)
    Full Time - 40 Hours per Week - 1.Successful completion of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.


    Excellent written communication skills, including experience writing requisitions for supplies, and writing reports regarding occurrences at the job site; and the ability to read and understand plans including floor plans, sketches, manufacturer's literature on the installation and maintenance scheduling of equipment, WHMIS information, Material Safety Data Sheets and safety training course materials; as well as possessing mathematical skills for ordering and maintaining Inventory and conducting measurements and various other calculations related to the position.

    A working knowledge of basic electricity, basic plumbing, heating system operation, yard maintenance, cleaning procedures and techniques, fire extinguishers and alarms.

    A working knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures such as WHMIS, use of personal protective equipment, lifting techniques, materials handling, and working from ladders and scaffolding.

    Floor machines and lawn maintenance equipment including working from ladders, scaffolding, scissor-lifts, and man-lifts.

    Excellent working knowledge of a computerized environment, including data entry in various software programs, internet, and e-mail.


    Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate and function effectively with both internal and external parties including supervisors, plant staff, teachers, students, and contractors.


    Subjects to the Board's duty to accommodate, ability to perform required physical tasks, including climbing ladders and scaffolding, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying moderate and heavy loads, including janitorial equipment, furniture, materials/supplies, pails of water and bags of garbage.


    Under the direction of the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or the Custodial Coordinator(s), the Head Caretaker will be responsible for the daily co-ordination and changes to work assignments.

    The Head Caretaker will assist with the coordination of training for new and casual caretakers and cleaners assigned to the site, as directed by the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or the Custodial Coordinator(s).

    The Head Caretaker will facilitate, review, and organize community use requests and interface with the electronic Community Use module, School Administrators and Central Facility staff to ensure the programs are delivered, scheduled, and set up as required.

    Co-operate with the Principal or Designate to ensure a safe and clean work environment for staff and students and assist the Principal or Designate with site emergencies.


    Service and maintain the computerized HVAC heating system, including turning the system on/off, changing filters, greasing parts, and monitoring the operation of the system.

    Attending the school to ensure the heating system is running on weekends and holidays, as requested.

    Ensure that legal requirements are met with respect to safety and the building code, fire code and other related laws and regulations.

    Report infractions by staff to the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or the Custodial Coordinator(s).


    Ensure compliance with WHIMS regulations and that chemicals are used, labelled, and stored safely in accordance with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).

    This includes referencing MSDS's using computer programs.


    Operate the school security system, including checking and locking interior/exterior doors, checking, closing, and locking windows through the building, turning lights on/off and activating the security system at the end of the shift.

    Assist external groups using the school facilities, including opening/locking doors, and reporting any concerns to the principal, i.e., damages, smoking, fire regulations.

    Attend the school for fire, security, or other after-hours events.

    Maintain inventory of materials related to cleaning, including ordering, receiving and storage of cleaning materials and products.


    Prepare and maintain accurate records as required, including ministry regulated reports/records, occurrence reports, school logs and inspections, security system reports, fire alarm checks.

    Assist the Principal to carry out fire drills, safety audits and workplace inspections.

    Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Facility Operations and/or Custodial Coordinator(s), Principal or Designate.
