Introduction
Manitoba Forestry and Peatlands Branch is searching for two Resource Technicians.

These roles fall into the Regional Forest Services Section of the Branch and report to senior forestry staff located in the Central and Northwestern regions of Manitoba.

One position is located in Gimli and the second is located in The Pas.

These positions are linked to the delivery of sustainable forest management programs in Manitoba through involvement in timber administration, forest harvesting operations and silvicultural operations.

Both positions are primarily associated with field work responsibilities.


Conditions of Employment:


  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent from another province.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to remote locations throughout the Province of Manitoba via trucks, allterrain vehicles, boats, or rotary or fixed wing aircraft.
  • Must be able to obtain Scaling License and Pesticide Applicators License at first available opportunity.
  • Must be willing and able to work overtime when required and work outoftown for extended periods of up to ten days with overnight accommodations in bunkhouses, hotels and tents.
  • Must be physically capable of performing duties of the position which require moderate physical effort including carrying equipment such as chainsaws and forestry samples for long distances potentially over rough terrain and in adverse weather conditions.

Qualifications:


  • Essential:
  • Postsecondary education in Forestry, Natural Resource Management or other environmental science discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Experience using GIS software and database software.
  • Ability to work independently under mínimal supervision.
  • Experience collecting, reviewing and compiling data.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan and schedule.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers and the public.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.

Desired:

  • Knowledge of the Forest Act, The Forest Use and Management Regulation and the forest management guidelines for Manitoba.
  • Experience operating passenger vehicles in all weather conditions and a variety of road conditions (pavement, gravel, ice roads).
  • Field experience with timber harvesting, road construction, or silvicultural operations.

Duties:


The Forest Technician is responsible for assisting the Regional Forester and other technical staff with Silviculture and Timber Management as required and directed.

The incumbent is also responsible to provide technical assistance to the Forester and Integrated Resource Management Team (IRMT) to ensure the implementation of sound forest renewal strategies within the Region.

The incumbent is responsible to supervise subordinate departmental staff and contractors.
