    Default job background
    Description

Port McNeill Full Gospel Church is seeking a new pastor Outgoing pastor, Stan Rukin, is retiring after 14 years of highly effective ministry in the church and community.

Please peruse the information below to see an overview of:

    • What we are praying for in our new pastor
    • What our community is like
    • What our church is like
    • Remuneration
    • How to respond, if interested in chatting further about this opportunity

    Our new pastor:

There are different kinds of shepherds, there are those that sit on a rock above the flock and keep watch over them, there are gatekeepers that monitor the fencing, then there are those that sit in the mud among their flock. While a bit of all is good, we would like to see the one that wants to sit among their flock and lead from the middle.

As for the Word and dogma, you will find there are many in the church with differing ideas regarding particular portions of the Bible but we don't tend to get bogged down, as the important thing is what we believe about Jesus Christ. Everyone is working toward unity in the Spirit which tends to keep everyone grounded.

It's also important for our pastor to have a strong team mindset. We have a vibrant leadership team of nine individuals, who are well rooted in the church and the community with literally hundreds of years of service.

We would like to see the following in our pastor:

    • A lover of people both within the church and community
    • In agreement with our mission, vision, and statement of faith
    • Our future pastor will be well-versed in the following:
    • Bible/Word (not necessarily a degree in theology)
    • Personal and Corporate Prayer
    • Supports individuals/visitation
    • Vision for our church and our community
    • Spirit-filled and moves in the Spirit
    • Hears from God

While the above discussion of past pastoral searches is important, we do not have to have a veteran pastor, as we have had novice pastors in the past. There are lots of people resources in our church. We have three former pastors within our congregation, a veteran leadership team with ample giftings and we have a good core group of worshipers and musicians that rotate on a schedule. If the new pastor is secure in who they are and their calling and willing and able to recognize that they need help in some areas, we likely have people who can help with those areas. We don't expect the new pastor to show up with Superman undergarments because we know that leads to burnout. We will support whoever God calls here and try to help them succeed in their calling as that will benefit us the most Our current pastor, Stan Rukin is retiring and staying in the community, and he has said he would be willing to help the new pastor as needed in a passive capacity.

Our general expectations would be that the new pastor preaches on Sundays, and they can get help from our leaders to cover days they are not there or unable. Service leading is not expected as there are many who can do this. Complete visitations and support the congregation as needed. Complete the administration of the church as required with the help of the board. Have at least 3 days in the church office each week where people know they can come if needed. We expect our pastor to have a sabbath day once per week and stick to it. There are NO expectations of the pastor's spouse, as they are not paid.

    Our Community

We are in close proximity of five indigenous communities on the North Island with many more out in the Inside Passage. This heritage is rich and the Port McNeill Full Gospel Church treasures our opportunities. Unlike other communities, Port McNeill is not adjacent to or connected to a First Nations reserve.

With a population of 2356 (Census 2021), Port McNeill is a prime new location for anyone; with or without a family. Centrally located in the heart of the North Island communities, Port McNeill is a full service community offering schools (elementary and secondary), a hospital, medical clinic with staff, dental clinic, pharmacy, RCMP detachment, fire department and various shopping opportunities. What we do NOT have is a Starbucks but there are specialty coffee shops in each community. Please keep in mind that part of the charm of Port McNeill is it location. We are a rural and somewhat remote town but we are smack dab in the beauty of God's creation

For information follows these links for some details:

If you like the outdoors, you will have no end of places to visit. Access to the great outdoors is a mere five minutes in any direction. Considered an international vacation destination, the North Island is an outdoor enthusiast's dream.

Our community is a mix of professionals and blue-collar workers with forestry the backbone of many livelihoods. We are a hardworking and well paid community

Port McNeill became a settlement in 1936; and the first town incorporated under the new Canadian Constitution on February 18, 1966. Originally a location to service the local logging and forestry industries (circa 1930's), the "camp" eventually grew into a town. Our local museum does a nice job of featuring those early days.

You will notice that the community is set up like an amphitheater to the waterfront, with the town core in the bottom and most homes on the hillside with a tremendous view of the Broughton Strait, Broughton Archipelago, and amazing mainland coastal mountains.

The highway to the North Island was completed in 1979 and things started to grow. Internet is provided by optic fiber which was available over 10 yrs ago.

Hwy 19 can be challenging in the winter as it goes through some mountain passes thus a good front wheel drive, 4×4 and/or AWD vehicle is recommended, and snow/mountain tires are required Oct to Mar. There is no cell reception on the majority of the Hwy north of Campbell River until you come to Woss or Port McNeill.

Weather in Port McNeill is similar to Vancouver, including rainfall other than we don't normally get snow as we are by the ocean. Winter (mid Oct to February) can be tough in that it can be overcast for long periods, and this does affect some people more than others. Spring starts in mid-February and summers can be spectacular rolling into the fall.

    Our Church

Our church has a culture that is rooted in family. We genuinely love, serve and support each other and we have many relationships outside of the church that are equally important as our community is small. You will walk down the street and literally be stopped by people who know you and are interested in how you are doing. People will wave at you from their cars as they drive by because they know you.

Many people have come and gone through our doors and the vast majority left stronger in the faith and as more healthy people. It is a safe place grow and we have developed standards by which we operate that help it to be a safe place to worship, experience and move in the Holy Spirit and to move out in one's mission they feel called too.

We like the things of the Spirit, and we are well invested in our worship program with a core group of musicians who rotate on a weekly schedule. The worship team meets weekly for prayer, praise and practice. As well, women's group and men's group happen weekly and monthly we gather corporately for a time of "soaking worship" in the evening. These groups that gather are akin to Homegroups, but at this time we do not have formal home groups which we have had in the past at various times.

We livestream our preaching sessions for the community at large to watch and it normally gets 40-80 hits in a week. We used to live stream the entire service, but we found greater freedom in worship if that portion was not streamed. Sunday attendance can be anywhere from 25-60 but normally about

Neighborhoods within towns and cities cycle through the years and our community is getting older overall, currently, our church is in a season of fewer children and youth. This in part could be that no one has taken up the call to lead those ministries which we have been blessed with in the past. This could be changing and that is exciting.

Our church meets at 10:30 am on Sunday and normally stops by noon.

We have always supported missions and we believe in supporting local, national, and international missions that help spread the gospel work which we do with 10% of our total giving each month. The church "tithes" as an example to our congregation.

Our leadership consists of an Eldership team which is the Pastor, Stan and Margret, Dan and Cheryl Jorgenson, Miles and Mei-Ling Trevor. The board consists of the Eldership team as well as our Deacons Karen Cooper, Matthew Baron, Trevor Smith, and Alan Jorgenson. The chairman is the Pastor and Lead Elder. AGM is February 25 and this time of celebration will see some new Deacons installed. Our AGMs are socials with food and always good, definitely a model to be taken elsewhere.

A Bit of Our Church History

The church began approximately in 1972 when a group of believers decided to build a church on a donated lot for spirit-led worship.

The church has seen as many as 180 people attending back in 1998.

The church supported a full-time youth pastor (various individuals) for almost 20 years. During that time period we saw many kids from the community come to use the church for their activities.

We used to hold an after-school program that saw many children from the community come and there was lots of seed sown at that time.

The church has always been mortgage free, is financially solid and the building is maintained with no major issues.

We have helped with spiritual services in Alert Bay, Woss, Port Alice, Port Hardy, and Quatsino Reserve because we see ourselves as part of a much larger, close-knit community and we lend help where needed.

    Pastor Remuneration

A compensation package will be in keeping with training and experience. We also consider the national average salary for a pastor of a rural church of our size. Salary is indexed yearly as per the CPI and every 3 years the salary package is reviewed to ensure we are keeping up with the national average and our pastor is well cared for.

We provide 2 weeks of holidays up to 5 years of experience and 3 weeks over 5 years which the pastor is encouraged to use. We also provide a health benefit of $4000/yr for a couple/family to be used as needed for any medical/dental or physical well-being needed, but this benefit is per year and does not roll over year to year and unused portions are not paid to the pastor. There is also a small allowance for books and 'meals out' for ministry that can also be used as needed.

    Contacts

If you need more information and/or specifics you can reach out to:

Miles Trevor and/or Dan Jorgenson both Church Elders) with regards to the church items. Pastor Stan Rukin is still in office , but he would prefer to be in a passive capacity than the first point of contact.

Rod Barks (ACOP Regional Director) is helping to facilitate the pastoral search.

Cheryl Jorgenson Church Elder) regarding town and community items (past Port McNeill visitor information employee).
