While respecting and embodying Raven's Zero Waste and community building philosophy throughout, the incumbent's focus is leading warehouse and public drop-off operations in accordance with all relevant contracts and business programs.


In collaboration with the Yard/Logistics and Depot managers, the Warehouse Operations Manager is primarily responsible for overseeing the processing of recyclable material through entire life cycle from collecting to shipping, including management of the sale of recyclable products.

This position demands a high level of responsibility, leadership, commitment, problem solving, creativity and flexibility. The incumbent must also have a good sense of humour.

Duties & Responsibilities


Administrative

  • Provide fiscally responsible management of the warehouse budget in collaboration with the Executive Director by:
  • Working with the Executive Director to secure financial contributions from local governments and to bid on tenders that arise for the management of recyclable material.
  • Maintaining a current understanding of commodity prices and markets, and negotiating new arrangements with brokers when necessary.
  • Managing all warehouse paperwork, including invoices, timesheets and data entry.
  • Participate actively on various joint committees as required to maintain ongoing relationships of the Raven team.
  • Communicate and liaise with commercial haulers, community depots and transfer station personnel to ensure product coming to Raven is of the highest possible quality and to problem solve issues that arise from time to time.
  • Communicate regularly with the City of Whitehorse Waste and Water Services personnel to maintain a good working relationship and collaborate on improving the recycling and waste management systems.

Equipment and building maintenance

  • Ensure equipment, building and public drop off are maintained to a standard that maximizes the life of all assets by:
  • Overseeing weekly monitoring of the warehouse and public drop of.
  • Documenting areas of concern.
  • Maintaining records of all monitoring activities.
  • Collaborating with other Raven managers to ensure recommendations made during monitoring are addressed.
  • Overseeing the equipment and building maintenance personnel and performing repairs and maintenance when necessary.
  • Ensuring all warehouse workers have appropriate training and experience.
  • Ensure compliance with safety levels required by WCB and fire inspection including snow removal, litter clearing and commodity storage clearances.
  • Respond to building and personnel related emergencies in a timely manner.

Staff management & labour

  • Oversee all warehouse and public drop off operations, including the Papersave program, by:
  • Managing and providing leadership in all warehouse operations-related HR activities including recruitment, training, performance management, team building and scheduling.
  • Holding regular toolbox meetings with warehouse staff to direct operations.
  • Ensuring that staff have appropriate safety training and supplies, and that staff follow approved safety procedures in all aspects of their work.
  • Identifying opportunities for staff training.
  • Mentoring other warehouse workers towards additional levels of responsibility when appropriate.
  • Undertaking the duties and responsibilities of warehouse workers as required.
  • Making responsible decisions about any changes in operations and staffing needed in response to adverse conditions such as cold weather and equipment failure.

Project management & contractor oversight

  • Maintain communication and oversight of all building and equipment maintenance and repair projects by:
  • Maintaining a list of contractors for building and equipment repair.
  • Arranging contracts for building and equipment repair and maintenance when necessary.
  • Ensuring that all contractors have the necessary safety training and insurance.

Other duties

  • Lead a safety committee with regular meetings.
  • Provide input and guidance for longterm strategic planning.
  • Purchase supplies as necessary.
  • Ensure messaging about recycling is aligned with other departments.
  • Respond to public inquiries and ensure a high level of customer service is provided by all warehouse employees.
  • Work with the Yard and Logistics Manager to source, collect and process material for Raven's wood chip boiler throughout the year and ensure there is an adequate supply in advance of boiler season.
