Working for the Department/Faculty


The Earth and Atmospheric Sciences department was established in 1995 when the former departments of Geology and Geography were merged.

The EAS department has grown to more than 50 faculty members, and over 120 graduate students, and is recognized for its scholarly achievement, excellence in teaching and research, and service to the community.


Position


The position of Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) Technician improves the link between the department and the various university-based researchers and the scientific community at large.

This is achieved by increasing the capacity of the department's scanning electron microscopes. The technician services a client base of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and industry clients.


Duties
Provides technical expertise and service for the EAS SEM Laboratory:

  • Operates the Sigma FESEM and the EVO SEM for lab clients producing high quality data on a wide variety of sample types using various SEM imaging modes and X-ray analysis
  • Advises and assists clients on appropriate techniques to generate high quality data including SEM operating modes, sample type, and sample preparation
  • Provides lab clients with information on the theory and operation of the SEM to help them better understand how the instruments can best serve specific research objectives
  • Assists with training lab clients to be competent independent users of the SEM
  • Assists with maintenance of equipment including troubleshooting, communicating with service engineers, and routine maintenance on the SEM and associated equipment
  • Has functional knowledge of computer operating systems/lab software
Provide administrative support for the EAS SEM Laboratory

  • Assists with scheduling instrument time for clients
  • Assists with monitoring supply levels, and communicates any shortages or deficiencies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum education is a technical diploma in a related field, Bachelor of Science degree preferred
  • Previous independent experience operating an electronbeam instrument

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to deal with multiple and critical deadlines, and to manage time and resources effectively are essential attributes
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds and knowledge bases are critical
  • Functional knowledge of computer operating systems/lab software
