Job Summary
The Yard Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of the company yard and shop facility. This role manages shipping and receiving, inventory control, yard organization, and internal logistics, while supporting field operations and ensuring materials and equipment are available when needed. The Yard Supervisor's primary goal is to maintain an organized, efficient, and safe yard that supports project execution and company standards.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise and direct daily yard operations in line with company procedures and operational needs.
- Provide leadership and support to yard personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and organized work practices.
- Maintain accountability for yard cleanliness, organization, and overall functionality.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between yard operations and field staff.
Shipping & Receiving
- Oversee all incoming and outgoing shipments for the yard and active projects.
- Verify Bills of Lading (BOLs) against purchase orders and packing slips for accuracy.
- Work with Project Managers and Superintendents to confirm materials received match project requirements.
- Identify and report discrepancies immediately and coordinate corrective action.
- Ensure materials are properly labeled, staged, and stored in designated areas.
Inventory Management
- Oversee ordering, tracking, and management of company-owned water and sewer inventory stock (non-project specific materials).
- Maintain appropriate stock levels to support operational flexibility and emergency needs.
- When materials are pulled from yard inventory for a project, ensure they are properly coded and charged to the correct project.
- Adjust inventory quantities in the system at the time of issue and maintain accurate records.
- Monitor stock levels and initiate replacement orders when inventory falls below acceptable thresholds.
- Conduct routine physical counts and reconcile discrepancies to maintain system accuracy.
Yard Organization & Logistics
- Organize equipment, trucks, trailers, materials, and staff parking within the yard.
- Maintain clear staging areas for project mobilization and demobilization.
- Ensure safe traffic flow and proper storage practices at all times.
- Coordinate movement of equipment and materials to support field operations.
Field Support
- Act as the primary point of contact for field staff requiring specialty tools, small packers, and yard materials.
- Track distribution and return of tools and specialty equipment.
- Ensure tools and equipment are stored properly and ready for deployment.
- Coordinate with the Shop regarding repairs, maintenance, and replacements as required.
Facility & Grounds Maintenance
- Maintain building exterior and yard conditions, including snow removal at doorways and high-traffic areas.
- Ensure gates, access points, and yard infrastructure remain operational.
- Identify and report maintenance issues affecting safety or operations.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and professional yard environment.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records within the company inventory system and ERP platform (Vista).
- Enter, track, and manage inventory transactions, material coding, and adjustments in Vista.
- Ensure all materials issued to projects are properly coded within the ERP system.
- Provide regular updates to the Management regarding inventory levels, yard issues, and operational needs.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in construction yard operations, material handling, logistics, or shop supervision.
- Experience with inventory management systems; experience using an ERP system is required.
- Mandatory use of the company ERP system (Vista); training will be provided.
- Strong organizational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficient in written and verbal English, able to communicate clearly with field and office staff.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and accountability.
- Proven ability to multi-task and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Commitment to maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
- Competent in computer skills for inventory tracking and documentation
- Class 5 Drivers License
