Asian Foods and Global Cities - Winter 2023


Course Description


This course explores the social circulation of Asian-identified foods and beverages using research from geographers, anthropologists, sociologists, and historians to understand their changing roles in ethnic entrepreneur-dominated cityscapes of London, Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong, and New York.

Foods under study include biryani, curry, coffee, dumplings, hoppers, roti, and tea.

In accordance with the current CUPE 3902 collective agreement, the rate of pay applicable for SIA classification will be $50.74 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.

UTSC kitchen lab TA experience, demonstrable enthusiasm/knowledge of culinary experiential learning and academic research in history and or food studies and or Asian history as linked to previous teaching and/or marking experience of food history and food studies courses.


Relevant Criterion:


Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position

Duties:


Sessional Instructional Assistants will provide grading support that includes making detailed comments and marking of assignments, tests, and exams as well as invigilation of the in-class midterm (the class is scheduled on Thursdays 11-1 pm) and if required, the final exam.

Other duties as determined by the supervisor.
