CIVIL CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR (Part Time)

This position is based in the Lower Mainland and this person will perform services for a portfolio of civil construction projects owned by our Power Utility and Municipal clients.

There are several on-going capital and maintenance projects of varying size, diversity, and location across the Lower Mainland.

Responsibilities:

Providing Quality Control/Quality Assurance inspections on work conducted by external contractors for construction projects of varying size and complexity


Work may include:

  • Civil works, such as underground duct banks, ditch infills, dike construction/modifications, pilasters, culvert/bridge installations and various concrete structures.
  • Water and sewer infrastructure, as well as proximal inspections of existing facilities such as pipelines, chambers, and pump stations.
  • Work in and around manholes, such as managing water, pumping, confined space, and traffic control
  • Ensuring all works are done in accordance with both the client and Maven standards, contract documents, design drawings and any other relevant specifications.
  • Reviewing preliminary designs and providing recommendations as to their suitability and applicability.
  • Providing technical assistance in the development of solutions for preliminary design problems related to unstable soils, topographical issues or civil worksrelated challenges identified during the design phase.
  • Supporting designers in preparation of accurate record drawings.
  • Filling out civil forms such as daily reports, nonstandard forms, and completion forms.
  • Leading prejob meetings with prime contractors to discuss scope of work, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Attending project status site review meetings to ensure adherence with appropriate construction standards and procedures.
  • Assuring that Quality Inspection and Test Plans are followed.
  • Reporting compliance and violations to the project team.
  • Perform other related duties as required for each specific project

Requirements:


  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering; or
  • Diploma or Certificate in the Civil Engineering Technology and at least two years progressive, directly related experience; or
  • High School Graduate with minimum of 10 years' experience in civil underground infrastructure construction. Experience inspecting civil underground infrastructure is an asset.
  • May be registered or eligible for registration with ASTTBC as an Applied Science Technologist, or equivalent.
  • May be a Certified Public Works Inspector
  • Knowledge of engineering related subprofessional practices such as basic design, surveying, inspection, and construction, related to public utilities
  • Able to read structural/civil/utility drawings (i.e., from other utilities) and interpret the information with respect to impact to design/construction drawings
  • Working knowledge of relevant design codes, standards, and guidelines such as: MMCD, AASHTO, NBCC and CSA standards, CDA Guidelines, USACE Manuals, MOTI Utilities manual, etc.
  • Familiarity with proper safety procedures and WCB requirements related to heavy civil construction
  • Knowledge of construction management and coordination practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Welldeveloped planning, organizational, analytical, and problemsolving skills
  • Valid BC Class 5 driver's license
