Position Summary:


Reporting to the Senior Editor, the Editor is responsible for identifying, vetting, and improving scholarly manuscripts and high-end trade titles in the fields under the Editor's supervision.

The Editor will develop the Press's reputation for high quality publications and as a respected presence in the academic community and be responsible for putting manuscripts through external peer assessment, submitting them for presentation to the MQUP Publications Review Committee for approval on content grounds, and preparing them for transmittal to staff in the Production department.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Through reading new and upcoming work, develop expertise in four to six fields of the humanities and social sciences in which the Press would publish.
  • Maintain a familiarity with the most advanced research and writing within those fields, and with the individuals who are doing advanced work within them; encourage, negotiate, and work with scholars all over the world (ranging from entrylevel scholars to world experts), in turning their work into publishable book form; manage the peer assessment of the work as submitted by various scholars.
  • Represent the Press at several events annually including travel to meetings of relevant scholarly associations and acquiring manuscripts at various university departments across Canada.

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:

  • A Bachelor of Arts degree, preferably in the humanities or social sciences required, graduate degree desirable.
  • Experience as an editor is preferable.
  • Interpersonal skills, particularly tact and diplomacy in providing feedback to scholars on revision to their work.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, particularly with respect to feedback received during peer review.
  • Excellent writing skills; strong attention to detail; strong organizational skills to see the work through to completion of the publication.
  • Knowledge of French and English:_
