The Job You Will Perform:

The Maintenance Manager is a key leadership role for the Grande Prairie Mill. The person in this role is the leader of the Maintenance organization at a medium complexity pulp mill. This position is a Lead Team position and reports directly to the mill manager.

The Maintenance Manager will support IP's performance goals by managing day-to-day maintenance organization responsibilities, as well as aligning the strategy for the maintenance department with the Grande Prairie Mill's vision, organizational values, and operating strategy with the company's global strategic direction.


Key Accountabilities:

Responsibilities include all aspects of equipment care, predictive maintenance repairs, reliability and cost management. The Maintenance Manager ensures the development of short-term and long-term reliability and improvement strategies.

The Maintenance Manager must manage in a goal-oriented environment to deliver targeted results in the areas of Safety, Employee Engagement, Cost Reduction and Reliability Excellence.

The Maintenance Manager is also responsible for driving and delivering sustainable results for the GMS Reliability element and sub-elements, which he/she owns.


  • Other key duties/responsibilities_:
  • Provide active, visible support for the mill safety program as the highest priority. Lead Grande Prairie to an injuryfree work environment through leadership and role modeling safe behavior and personal attention to and direct involvement in safety activities and maintaining a clean and orderly work environment
  • Participate in the development of the budget, strategic and reliability processes
  • Lead the facility to superior manufacturing achievement through superior maintenance techniques, total quality principles and preventative maintenance
  • Help develop, demonstrate and support an organizational culture based upon values of empowerment, high involvement, and participative work force in a customer and qualityfocused organization
  • Ensure team member relations efforts and engagement processes are in place to maximize discretionary effort and influence continued desire to work and contribute at the Grande Prairie Mill
  • Demonstrated leadership to develop and maintain a high level of teamwork and cooperation between maintenance and other production teams
  • Assist other team leaders and/or team members in the mill as necessary to minimize downtime and maintain quality
  • Coach safety in others with a commitment to developing and maintaining positive employee relations
  • Develop direct reports and effectively utilize the Career & Development Roadmap process in the department
  • Maintain a focus on developing a strong reliability culture where a clear partnership exists between Maintenance, Operations, Stores and Engineering.
  • Manage the area to achieve budget manufacturing costs, working and ensuring appropriate attention to cost issues and searching for new methods to allow cost reductions.
  • Foster a culture that supports equipment care and improved reliability with goals to continuously reduce unscheduled downtime. Demonstrated ability to focus on closing realizable gaps and key Reliability metrics
  • Set expectations and hold both teams and individuals accountable for results

The Skills You Will Bring:


  • Minimum of ten years manufacturing experience with a minimum of five years in a manufacturing lead position in a paper mill, preferably in Maintenance or Maintenance Engineering.
  • Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, pulp and paper science is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated record of safety commitment and results.
  • Strong written & verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate to groups and individuals at all levels.
  • Preferred experience in strategic planning and budgeting process.
  • Experience working in a nonunion environment.
