Position Summary


Reporting to the Director, Communications, the Communications & Media Specialist is responsible for content writing, public relations and media management, web based and social media activities, as well as professional/technical facilitation and coordination in all areas of communications to ensure maximum visibility and positive corporate reputation for Homeward Trust Edmonton, its programs, and partners.


This position has significant contact with stakeholders, committee members, media, political and government representatives, general public, volunteers and all employees.


Duties & Responsibilities

_ Corporate Communications and Content Writing_

  • Research, write and edit content for digital and print marketing, quarterly newsletters, annual reports, social media, blog posts, web and other related communication mediums. Collaborate with internal departments, stakeholders and partners as required in development and writing of content.
  • Compile, develop and update collateral material for HTE and our projects/services.
  • Lead the development and production of the corporate annual report.
  • Provide proofreading and related communications support for all departments as required.

_ Government and Stakeholder Relations_

  • Draft and prepare of briefing notes, letters, reports and other documentation required for key funders, government officials and related stakeholders.
  • Under the leadership of the Director, Communications, build and execute communication strategies that proactively enhance and build our relations with all levels of government, the Indigenous community and other partners.
  • Ensure key stakeholders and supporters have appropriate and up to date information.

_Social Media Management_

  • Maintain and manage Homeward Trust's website and social media accounts, ensuring content is appropriate, relevant and up to date
  • Research and develop a constant rotation of statistics and data on our websites, securing information from internal departments and relevant external sources.
  • Review analytics for websites on a regular basis and provide updates.
  • Manage HTE's social media platforms, including creating content (written and graphic), moderating responses and staying up to date on trends.

_ Public Relations and Media Activities_

  • Ensure HTE has appropriate presence within the communityatlarge and create strategic opportunities for educational and informational sharing through earned media.
  • Identify and pursue media opportunities to highlight HTE programs and activities.
  • Monitor and distribute news coverage about both HTE and other initiatives related to homelessness and affordable housing.
  • Draft media releases, briefing notes and provide content and support for speeches and presentations.
  • Plan, logístical set up and execution of HTE media conferences and for appropriate HTE events and initiatives where media coverage is required. Coordinate and lead photo and publicity opportunities.
  • Provide communication support at HTE events including strategies for promotion and awareness, atevent signage and messaging, speaking notes and appropriate social media updates.
  • Maintain files/records/archives of past media coverage.

_ General Communications Responsibilities_

  • Maintain contact and distribution lists.
  • Support the dissemination of invitations, communication materials and correspondence as required.
  • Ensure that communications material (including electronic communication) is up to date, and that new information is going out in a timely manner.
  • Support all department activities as required, as well as other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

_ Education & Experience_

  • Degree or Diploma, preferably in a related area of study such as communications, journalism, marketing, or public relations.
  • Three to five years of experience in communications and media relations in the notforprofit, government, marketing/communications, corporate or media sectors. Experience in strategic communications planning preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing social media content, as well as managing social media accounts and websites. Previous work in basic graphic design, photo and print production is preferred.
